kmail cannot connect to host pop.xxx.xxx

I am a noob. (should be boob)

I am unable to get mail set up in kmail
i have set up sending mail ok
but recieving mail does not work
i get the error "unable to connect to host mail.xxx.xxx"
I know the host address is correct because it is the same address for sending as for recieving mail.

is there anywhere that I can see a detailed log of what is happening?
I have always just set up plain text login for other mail clients so I don't think I have to do anything else.

sorry people, I tried telnet to test port 110 of my server and I cannot connect with that either, so I guess it is my host that is down, just an unlucky coincedence
