When I go into add/remove programs, I am unable to install anything new. All of the pre-installed software is in there but when I enable software for all suites, I am not able to click on any of the other applications, such as firefox. I am completely new to linux so I am not technical but I would like to install clamav, a firewall, gaim, and firefox but I am not sure what to do after I download them? Could anyone help me?

Re: can't install new software
Ok, let's start from the very beginning. I'm presuming you are connected to the internet in Kubuntu.
1. Go to K Menu > System and launch Adept (Package Manager). It will ask for your password (I'm assuming you know what password to enter and what's happening here).
2. Once Adept is launched, go to the Adept menu (it's the first menu from the left) and choose "Manage Repositories"
3. You will be presented with a some lines which are probably grayed out. Now, take note of the following lines:
deb http://xx.archives.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dapper main restricted
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe
deb http://xx.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted
deb http://xx.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe
If any of these lines are grayed out, they are disabled. To enable them, right-click on the line and choose "Enable"
4. Once you're done making the changes, click on Apply (near the bottom), then Close (right beside it).
5. Click on "Fetch Updates"
Hopefully, if there are no internet/DNS/router problems, Adept will begin to fetch updates. After this, you can search for what you need to install.
Hope that helps.
Side Note for Experts: If you're still in doubt as to why most people give answers to problems like this using the command line or old-fashioned way (editing files), just take a look at how long this "guide" is.
