Help!! Packager and aRTS won't work

I'm new to Kubuntu. I tried installing Java JRE from the repositories and it hung in the middle of the install. I rebooted and was prompted with a message to restart aRTS or turn off aRTS (whatever that is).

Also, when I run Adept, I can't update anything ("Fetch Updates" and "Apply Changes" are greyed out). I get a message saying another process is using the packaging system. I looked at running processes but couldn't tell which was the problem. Attached is a list of my running processes:

On the command line (K Menu --> System --> Konsole), try:
    sudo killall adept
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade -f

If this doesn't fix the problem, copy & paste the output here so we can see what apt-get tell us.

same problem with me just today. After trying to install a package with Adept it stopped in the middle of the install  .
Any time I try to open Adept I get this message You will not be able to change your system settings in any way (install, remove or upgrade software), because another process is using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept application or apt-get or aptitude). Please close the other application before using this one.
Searching but did not find some other process using adept
By typing sudo adept I see that it is sill trying to install/restore the last packages (the ones who caused the crash ) here's what I get
      Code:

Anyway the proteus71 suggestion worked fine for me

Didn't work. It said there were no processes to kill. Here's the last couple lines of my output. I still want to be able to use Adept.

Re: Help!! Packager and aRTS won't work

          I'd run
          dpkg --configure -a
as it suggests.  If that fails, post the output here.

BTW: I'm not trying to get you to switch from Adept to apt-get.   I just know apt-get better; if I tried to help by tweaking Adept, I wouldn't be much help.  Besides, once we get dpkg working properly, Adept should work also.
