Can someone please tell me how to install tar.gz files? I am looking for an mp3 player because amarok is not working and i don't know why so I decided to download another mp3 player. Unfortunately most other mp3 players are in this format. I tried the debian package of xmms but it said it depended on a few certain files. When i tried downloading those, it wouldn't work.

Before you go ahead and install new media players, you might want to learn first why Amarok doesn't seem to play MP3s.
The reason is that Kubuntu doesn't have support for proprietary codecs out of the box, and this includes MP3s. To get MP3s to play in Kubuntu, you need to install just one package called libxine-extracodecs. This package is found in the multiverse repository, which you have to add/enable.
