    Video playback performance

I've recently built what is basically a media center using Kubuntu out of a PIII 450/Radeon 9200 machine I threw together, and I was wondering if there was any good way to improve video playback performance on this specific hardware platform.

I've already switched from the 386 kernel Kubuntu used by default to the 686 one, and that helped some, but I still get choppy playback on high-resolution XviD, DivX, and especially h/x264 files.

I'm using MPlayer and VLC for software playback at the moment, and I was specifically wondering if there were a way to customize these apps to gain a little speed.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Will installing the MPlayer-686 package help?

How do I confirm that MPlayer is running using the 686 compilation?
