    Google Earth in Kubuntu?

Google Earth has to be one of the slickest things on the Internet. I have enjoyed it in Linspire and Mepis. But I can't get it to work in Kubuntu.

When I install it, I get this error:
setup.data/bin/Linux/amd64/setup.gtk2: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

When I go ahead and execute it, this is the error:
./googleearth-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libXcursor.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Is this a Kubuntu problem or an amd64 problem or just something I need to do that I haven't done?

My experience is that googleearth will only install and run as sudo. Other than that works fine, but thats on a Dell Inspiron 32 bit.

Thanks. I gotta bad feeling it's due to my running the amd64 distro. I already can't use Mailwasher because of that.

It's neat to run an OS tailored for my CPU, but I may end up paying too big a price.

Thanks for that feedback. Now to decide whether to bite the bullet, lose all my customizing, and reinstall.

Well, I know how to save some stuff, but I always lose stuff, too.

Try install package: libgtk2.0-0 and libxcursor1

Thanks, but too late. I had run into a couple of other problems due to the 64-bit thing, so I've reinstalled with the i386. Everything is working fine.

this will not help. it indeed might be 64-bit related, as I am having the same libxcursor error while I do have both of these packages. It just seems Google Earth will not run in 64-bit linux yet.

This might be a bit of a nasty workaround: but what if you try and go multi-boot?

a 32 bit and 64 bit version on your pc for as long as the 64 bit versions are not working properly.

The 32 bit version will work ( you're just not getting all the performance you should )

Yup, i had to use an i386 platform rather than the 64bit amd because a lot of software didn't work, had the same problem with FreeBSD. You lose too much just for the sake of the platform version

                        Hi,
I do not think this is a 64 bit issue as I had it running on Breezy 64 bit but have not tried it on Dapper.
