    another video codec question

What the hells up with the repositories?

All I want to do is get the win32codecs.

Apparently, they have been removed from universe and multiverse (something about legal stuff). OK so I installed Automatix (eventually) and they don't appear there either.

So after a good bit of digging around, I see that they were available from and unofficial debian repository. The Ubuntu doc said to get them with wget, which I did and then install them with dpkg, which I tried and I get blown out by it.
    me@mypc:~$ wget -c http://www.debian-multimedia.org/poo...1-0.0_i386.deb
    --20:50:18-- http://www.debian-multimedia.org/poo...1-0.0_i386.deb
    => `w32codecs_20060611-0.0_i386.deb'
    Resolving www.debian-multimedia.org... 213.186.33.16
    Connecting to www.debian-multimedia.org|213.186.33.16|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 302 Found
    Location: http://www.debian.org [following]
    --20:50:18-- http://www.debian.org/
    => `index.html'
    Resolving www.debian.org... 194.109.137.218
    Connecting to www.debian.org|194.109.137.218|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 416 Requested Range Not Satisfiable

The file is already fully retrieved; nothing to do.

    me@mypc:~$ sudo dpkg -i w32codecs_20060611-0.0_i386.deb
    dpkg: error processing w32codecs_20060611-0.0_i386.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    w32codecs_20060611-0.0_i386.deb
    me@mypc:~$
Maybe someone could explain whats going on here? And how do I get round it please

    regards

    fatbloke

p.s. and yes I did see the post where someone pointed someone else toward a plf package and then doing the dpkg stuff, but when I tried to get the package, the URL just 404'd me !

      Re: another video codec question

I am not sure if this codec is the same I just downloaded with adept but it said win32codec. I was having a lot of problems installing software using it so I went to:

      http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources

and copy and paste as indicated in the instructions the new repositories. This solved the problems with my software installations. I saw yours and gave it a try typing what you are looking for and installed immediately. Now, I tried with a wmv file and it works.

      hope it helps.

        i believe you need libdvdcss2
add this to your apt sources list for your multimedia needs ...

        deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ sarge main

        then in a konsole write
        sudo apt-get update
        press enter

          Re: another video codec question

AFAIK, the w32codecs are not found in the repositories, due to some legal issues. They are available for download separately from the site that fatbloke mentioned (here are the instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...74003fde7daed5)

I'm guessing there was an error in downloading the .deb file? How about trying this:
          1. Go to the website directly: http://www.debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/w/w32codecs/
          2. Download the .deb file, somewhere
          3. Go to where you downloaded the file (still in Konqueror), right-click it, choose "Kubuntu Package Menu" then choose "Install Package"

          Hope that helps.

AFAIK libdvdcss2 is only needed if you wish to play css protected dvds, other propietary video formats (avi, wmv etc.) will play with w32codecs

Last I checked, w32codecs were also available in the PLF ubuntu repository mirrors (Penguin Liberation Front)

A mega thanks for all who replied. I've managed to crack this snag with this info from Jucato.

It did indeed. Once I'd got the link it was as you said, and I've since given it a quick test and it works fine - better than that, when I had my first install of Kubuntu, it would always open Kaffeine to play wmv's etc, but now it seems to play from Mplayer which is my prefered video player.

Got to go and cook some food now, but later I'll also try Gezzer's suggestion to get the libdvdcss2 as well.

Again, many thanks to all who replied. Very much appreciated.

              regards

                Re: another video codec question

One nice thing I liked about Kubuntu Dapper is the fact that you basically only need at least 2 packages to play most of your proprietary codecs: libxine-extracodecs and w32codecs. I've experience how to install multimedia support in Ubuntu (without Automatix/EasyUbuntu), and I've had to install no less than 5 GStreamer plugins.

Of course, if Kubuntu (or KDE) suddenly decided to go the GStreamer route, it would probably be the same situation.
