i dont think Gimp does that.....
i installed a gifcicle but it doesnt seem to want to work.....

Isn't AVI a movie format and GIF a picture format?

Are you trying to do screen captures?

not screen captures.....
i am trying to make a gif from a scene in a movie.....
in windoze, i used Movies 13 or Ulead gif maker.....
both did all the work for you.....

i read something about an avi plugin for Gimp but i cant find the plugins for it....

This seems to work:
mplayer input.avi -vo gif89autput=output.gif:fps=4.9

makes big, jumpy(fps) gif

so try mplayer.

i got Gimp GAP to work.....
seems i needed to just re-install MPlayer.....
