Adept is locked & I'm stuck - please help.

I've only been using Kubuntu 6.06 for a few days and am using Kyle Rankins book Ubuntu Hacks for guidance. Otherwise I have about 5 years experience mostly with Slackware.

While using Adept to install the Java packages (sun-java5-jre, sun-java5-plugin and sun-java-fonts) the installation froze. I could see an error message on the screen about 'numeric expected for " "'. After about 20 minutes of no screen motion (but other apps worked ok) I closed Adept. There were several processes in ps ax I killed.

After that, each time I tried to run it I got an error message about being locked. The message is below:

Read Only mode: Database Locked - Adept Manager
You will not be able to change your system settings in any way
(install, remove or upgrade software), because another process is
using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept
application or apt-get or aptitude. Please close the other
    application before using this one.
    OK

I ran updatedb for a new slocate database and found several lock files but am not sure what to do about them. They are:
    /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
    /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
    /var/lib/dpkg/lock
    /home/lba/.kde/share/apps/kabc/lock

Every time I try to run Adept I get the same error box, probably due t the lock files. Adept then comes up after I click OK on the error box but I'm afraid to do anything exceptI immediately close it.

    OK

I'm going to read up on locks and how to kill them

    What should I do?

    Try these commands:
    Code:
    sudo killall adept
    sudo killall dpkg
    kdesu adept
Linux is ready for the desktop--but whose desktop?<br />How to install software in Kubuntu

I had the same problem. I tried to install the java packages and since they are from Sun you have to agree to their terms. In Adept I never saw the agreement box so I couldn't click OK, and I had to kill Adept. If you use apt-get you can see Suns terms and agree to them. I deleted the lock files and ran
      dpkg --configure -a
and the problem was solved. I found the solution here: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=6088.0
To remove the lock files I used the following command:
      sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
as well as the the other files of course, I just changed the paths.
      Hope this works for you.

I'm having the same issue. When I execute the commands mentioned here, I get the following output:

        ~$ sudo killall adept
        Password:
        ~$ sudo killall dpkg
        dpkg: no process killed

        Then, when I do:

        ~$ kdesu adept

        I still get the:

"You will not be able to change your system settings in any way (install, remove or upgrade software), because another process is using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept application or apt-get or aptitude). Please close the other application before using this one."

~$ ps -ef | grep adept
        user01 5517 5457 0 14:02 pts/1 00:00:00 grep adept
~$ ps -ef | grep dpkg
        user01 5521 5457 0 14:02 pts/1 00:00:00 grep dpkg
~$ ps -ef | grep apt
        user01 5528 5457 0 14:08 pts/1 00:00:00 grep apt
        ~$

        Any other ideas?

when installing using adept, whenever it freezes, click on show details.....
sometimes there is a prompt so that you can agree to the terms.....
i am pretty sure that Java does this......

oh and i think if you do sudo apt-get update, it will tell you when its done what command to put to get it back to normal.....
          i forget what it was......

Yes, you need to click on Show Details and agree with the license agreement.

                It works like a charm

The command that really helped me solve the problems was this one:

                  sudo dpkg --configure -a

I recommend using synaptic instead of adept. Adept looks nicer but its very easy to uninstall a whole lot of important stuff by accident. Also synaptic provides a convenient method to view your install/ugrade/uninstall history, and that can be very useful to newbies who want to undo what they shouldnt have just done.

Re: Adept is locked &amp; I'm stuck - please help.

I tried installing wine using Adept. All of this happened. I did sudo apt-get update and it said to do dpkg --configure -a so i did that with sudo. It went to a screen asking if I want to download Flash plugin. I said yes. It said there was an error downloading the flash plugin. I closed everything and ran adept which finally works again. I tried installing something else and the exact same sequence occured again, except this time I selected no, to not accept the license for and download the flash plugin, but it still gave me the error that flash plugin was not properly installed. I never planned on getting a flash plugin, unless it came with the program I wanted. Now it seems like everything I try to get with Adept has this program even since earlier when I tried to get Wine.

I am a new linux user and do not know much about it.

What should I do to fix this so I can get software with Adept without problems?

Someone help me please! (read my previous post) I am unable to get the updates. I tried getting several different programs and this happens no matter what I do with Adept.

Thanks for any help, the sooner the better.

so you are saying that flash-plugin shows up everytime you try to install/upgrade?
i had this happen and i did this after i closed adept...
                          Code:
                          sudo apt-get -f install
i hope that works out for you... let us know...

My error from before was this.

The Macromedia flash plugin is to be downloaded from │
www.macromedia.com. This can be done automatically now. The │
│ distribution license of the Macromedia flash plugin is available │
                            │ at www.macromedia.com. │
                            │ │
│ Do you accept the license and do you want to download the flash │
                            │ plugin now?

Then after I did the sudo apt-get -f install it went to that same message as above. I selected no, like I usually do, unless I should be selecting yes, but that usually doesn't work either. After selecting no, I got this error.

                            dpkg: error processing flashplugin-nonfree (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
                            Errors were encountered while processing:
