    Kdetv

Hi again, since i still haven't recieved an answer to my problem i will post it again. After installing drapper i installed kdetv and gave it the same settings as in breezy. I get sound but no picture.

Does anyone have any ideas? I would realy like to get this to work. and no xawtv and tvtime don't work either.

My tvcard is a medion 7134 (Philips 7134 chip) It is installed and working.

Thanks in advance for the help.
    Cheers

    Re: Kdetv

Do you get error messages when you start xawtv or tvtime in the konsole ?

What do you get with: xawtv -hwscan

    I get:
    This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.15-26-k7)
    looking for available devices
    port 115-115

    /dev/video0: OK [ -device /dev/video0 ]
    type : v4l2
    name : BT878 video (Hauppauge (bt878))
    flags: overlay capture tuner
Are you using Ati or nVidia (or something else) ?

    For Ati:

      Re: Kdetv

HI rog, no i don't get an error message just a very fuzzy picture. But i don't like either of them so it's mute.
I have a ati 9250 grfic card. As i said it worked fine under breezy. I doubt that it would not be supported under drapper. (After all my desktop looks graet) )
The rest of your suggestions, what did you mean by:

      xv problems:
      Solution:
      Section "Module"
      SubSection "extmod"
      Option "omit xfree86-dga"
      EndSubSection

      and for tvtime:
      Solution:
      Section "Device"
      Option "VideoOverlay" "on"

bythw your links were not very usefull, sorry, but thank you anyway.

Any other ideas? I am realy desperate. well not realy i would just like to know way kdetv worked under breezy and not under drapper. Plus i am intrigued that although over 130 people viewed my first kdetv topic in mai only one person answered. But that wasn't very usefull either. so thank you again.

      cheers

        Re: Kdetv

        HI rog,
I reinstalled xawtv and ran the scan:
        fintan@fintanws1:~$ xawtv -hwscan
        This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.15-26-386)
        looking for available devices
        /dev/video0: OK [ -device /dev/video0 ]
        type : v4l2
        name : Medion 7134
        flags: overlay capture tuner

I don't know if that helps but when running kmplayer i get this error message: (eventhouhg my movies run fine)
It seams there is no xvideo support for your card or something to that extent so i ran xvinfo as suggested by mplayer:
        fintan@fintanws1:~$ xvinfo
        X-Video Extension version 2.2
        screen #0
        no adaptors present
        fintan@fintanws1:~$

        So what now?
Everthing worked fine under breezy. I am confused.

I hope this helps you help me.
        cheers

          Well - you could try

          SubSection "extmod"
          Option "omit xfree86-dga"
          EndSubSection
in the xorg.conf (Section "Module"). Remember backup first !

This helpped me when i upgraded from hoary to the breezy. Xawtv was crappy b&w after upgrade. But this module corrected it.

From /1/ "Without XVideo, this scaling would have to be done in software, which is possible but requires a considerable amount of processing power, sometimes to the point of slowing down/degrading the video stream."

Don't know if this helps you, but maybe

This is th "modules" section of my xorg.conf now:
            Section "Module"
            SubSection "extmod"
            Option "omit xfree86-dga"
            EndSubSection
            Load "i2c"
            Load "bitmap"
            Load "ddc"
            Load "dri"
            Load "extmod"
            Load "freetype"
            Load "glx"
            Load "int10"
            Load "type1"
            Load "vbe"
            EndSection

I didn't help though. I still get the same error under mplayer and no picture for kdetv. any suggestions?

After reboot still no xv (xvinfo) ?

Are you using mesa or fglrx drivers ?

              Quessing mode.

After upgrade (breezy to dapper) i have to reinstall several packages. One was mesa-common-dev. Package manager (synaptic) said that it was installed but OpenGL headers was missing. Reinstallation corrected it.

So you could try to reinstall mesa packages.

              Quessing mode off.

Mesa and fglrx are installed (as far as i can tell in synaptic). No change. Do you want me to uninstall and then reinstall? synaptic tells me that it will also get rid of a whole host of packages (kdedesktop, etc). if i uninstall mesa and its libs.

                I am at a loss.

Are you using mesa or fglrx drivers ?

Do you have in the xorg.conf line
                  Driver "ati "
                  or
                  Driver "fglrx"
                  It's in the Section "Device"

Or type fglrxinfo in to the konsole:

                  mesa:
                  $ fglrxinfo
                  display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 4.0.4
                  fglrx:
                  $ fglrxinfo
                  display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 XT Generic
                  OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)
About fglrx and everything below Radeon 9500:
Unfortunately OpenGL seems to be broken for R200 cards (everything below Radeon 9500) in this driver version. This may be fixed by replacing /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 with alibGL.so.1.2 from the previous driver version (8.24.8 ).

                  http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

Do you want me to uninstall and then reinstall?
No - just re-install. For installed packages options are: re-install, removal, complete removal. This may help (or may not ).

Just quessing ! Maybe something went wrong in the upgarde.
As i said it worked fine under breezy
Dapper thinks that all packages are ok, but they are not. So re-install mesa packages IF you are using mesa.

You're currently using the "vesa" driver,

Change it to either "ati" or "fglrx" in xorg.conf (depending on which driver you wish to use) and restart X

If for some reason X won't start, you can change it back with nano 'sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf'

                        You can reconfigure xserver settings:

                        sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

                        - asks lot of questions.
                        - backups your xorg.conf before writing new xorg.conf

Hi rog and kubiical. Changing the device to ati did the trick. I had to use video4linux AND xvideo plugins which chnaged a bit from breezy, but heh? Didn't try fglrx yet what is the difference? Is ist better to use sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg? Haven't tried that either yet.

Anyway thankx so much. I like getting to know linux this way.

                            Re: Kdetv

fglrx drivers are made by Ati (proprietary)

                            "Ati" drivers are opensource

                            From http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Fglrx

How much is the speed gain versus the opensource drivers?

Compared to the old drivers, approximately 40% speed gain have been noticed with fglrx. However, there are issues with freezing/garbage after suspend, garbage when resizing desktop (via ctrlaltplus, ctrlaltminus), and garbage while using VMware. The current 8.14.13 has shown 400% improvement over using the open source radeon driver: 1200 FPS for glxgears1! However the situation seems to be changing today. With recent x11-drm-20060608 driver (gentoo) and thinkpad t42 (ati 9600) the speed is confirmed as 1900fps without any single crash so far.
So - It gives you faster 3D. Or so it says

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg makes new xorg.conf file. It reconfigures all settings: modules, mouse, graphic card, display, ... If you are only changing "vesa" to "ati" it's faster/easier to use text editor.
