    programs don't start

I'm having strange problems which I hope I can define. Often when clicking on a program in the menu OR on an icon in the taskbar the program "goes through the motions" of opening but in the end doesn't start. By "going through the motions" I mean that the program icon starts coming up, turns around for a while (about 30 seconds) and the dissapears. The program doesn't open. After trying a few times, the program eventually starts.
This seems to happen randomlt to me with almost any program I try to operate adept, konqueror, etc. I hope my explanation can help somebody solve this very frustrating phenomena.

I've seen this as well. Usually it's one of two things:

    1. The mouse pointer seems to timeout and quit flashing, but the program is still starting up. This is usually indicated by the hard drive light flashing or my CPU monitor being pegged.

    2. A problem with the application itself. Of course, if that is the problem then the app will never start, so this may not be your case. When I encounter this, I run the app from a Konsole to see the output and try to debug the problem.

      TheDqrkSavant Hi
The problem may be connected to your second point. I, of course, know how to run the app from a konsole but how do I then try and debug it?

Well, mostly I just get lucky. For example, one specific problem I recall was with Eclipse, but that was just JAVA_HOME not pointing to the right JDK. I've had other problems with Firefox when a certain combination of extensions don't play well together, so I have to remove one of them.

It really depends on the output you get in the console. Sometimes it just doesn't make any sense to me and I'm stuck, but usually I can guess from the output. Sometimes the app depends on something that isn't installed, so installing that would work.

If you want to post the output from console I can give a shot at trying to give you some direction.

          TheDqrkSavant Hi
This is a very long post with examples!!
This is what I get when writing adept. It's rather long and starts off with errors, before getting to the script Adept eventually opens but see the last line of the script, it doesn't end with:
          errol@errolinux:~
          as it should.
With konqueror I get a similar situation (posted lower down under the adept script). Two other phenomina
          1. In neither case was I asked for my password for sudo - Is that normal?
2, In both cases the program opened even though te script seems faulty and the "errol@errolinux:~" start came back only after closing each program. Before the closing of the program the scrpit ended as shown.
By the way these "errors" or similar ones come up in almost every program I try to start in Konsole. the "error" script comes up but the program opens.
          Any input??

sudo can cache passwords, so if you've recently run a program as sudo, sometimes it won't ask.

I get the exact same output when I run these. I'm suspecting that perhaps your computer just doesn't have the horsepower to launch these programs very fast. I know my home machine takes quite a while to launch programs.

You can try using 'kdesu' to launch them from the konsole, but I really can't see anything wrong with the output.

How much memory do you have? If you have less than 512MB, then my guess is that Linux is swapping applications to disk to make room for the new app. Linux swaps to disk even when the memory is not full. This can really slow down a system if the drives are slow.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I just don't see anything obviously wrong in the output you posted.

I have a very strong computer. It has an AMD 3700+ 64 processor, 2 Giga memory, two 80 Giga SATA disks etc.etc.
So power can't be the problem. I have the Dapper i686 Kubuntu installed, maybe I should install the 64bit version? I hear there are some limitations with this but I don't really know.
Thanks all the same for your advice TheDarkSavant!!!!!!

p.s. Just thought of something. My /home is on the one disk and the Kubuntu on the other, Could this affect anything?? From what I understand, it shouldn't.

Wow, that should run things just fine! Perhaps it is the i686 version not being able to take advantage of the 64 bit architecture.

Having /home and /root on separate disks should actually speed things up a tad. Especially if they are on different ports/controllers.
