How to enable a network monitor

I am getting online thorouhg wvdial.
it is command line and i can not see the time duration, the bytes recieved and sent.
can anyone guide me how to enable a network monitor

Install knemo then log out and in again to make it run. (Or maybe you have to reboot, I forget) It'll put an icon in the system tray which will indicate network activity and when clicked on show you the stuff you're after.
