    Installing Nepenthes

How can I install the Nepenthes honeypot on Kubuntu?

    Re: Installing Nepenthes

There are debs available for both debian Sid and Etch. You could try those, but you might well run into difficulty. Kubuntu Dapper represents a branch from Sid, as it existed eight months ago, This exact versions of the libraries in Sid, now, are probably different. On the other hand, the library versions in Etch may not have caught up. So, you could get in trouble either way. That's why (K)Ubuntu users are STRONGLY advised against using Debian packages.

Unfortunately, there is no Nepenthes package for Ubuntu at this time. So you would have to install it from source. On the other hand, a Synaptic search of the repositories shows packages for both labrea and tinyhoneypot, so you could use one of those, if it suited your purpose.

    LATER:
    OOPS!
I was checking for nepenthes in the AMD64 repos. NEPENTHES is available in i386 repositories. All you have to do is activate the "universe" repos" by (removing the preceding '#' sign and you're good to go. I hope my blunder has not inconvenienced you.

      Hi,

Do you have a link to where I can download these files?

You're not going to want to download them manually, use the apt-get repositories for the package management system. adept is Kubuntu's interface for it.

To enable the universe repository in adept go to file>manage repositories, right-click on all the entries for the "universe" section, and select "enable."

          Hi,

Ok I enabled the Universal packages in Adept. Then I installed Nepenthes that I found on a site HERE and installed it but I get the following errors below. Will Nepenthes still run?

Well, you can try it, but my guess is that it will not run, based on the error message that you received.

              Hi,

I don't think its working, so your right, it seems that those are the only 3 errors I get and they are in the middle of the loading everything else seems to start fine, but how can I fix this problem and get Nepenthes to work?

              Thanks for your help,

              Justin

I would have to agree with askreiger -- however, did you install it with Adept or did you download it manually and install with dpkg? Theoretically the library issue could be a dependancy problem -- but I doubt that got past dpkg anyway.

                  Hi,

To install it I just right clicked the .deb file and went to Kubuntu Package Menu then clicked Install. But how can I fix this problem and get Nepenthes to work?

                        if so, try
                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get install -f
<br /><br />*temp. hiatus from forums due to comp + net broken* :&#039;(

                          Hi,

No I just downloaded a Ubuntu version of Nepenthes installed it using right click then went to Kubuntu Package menu then clicked Install, and tried using it in the terminal by typing Nepenthes. It looked like it loaded fine but if I scroll up a little in the terminal then I get the errors that I showed above (in screenshot). The package I downloaded was from http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/dapper/net/nepenthes

This doesn't seem to be working, are there any other ways I could install it and get it to work, or should I switch to a different Linux distro?

                            Re: Installing Nepenthes

The problem is that donig it the way you did, namely sidestepping the package management system, ALL you got was the nepenthes package. But, you did not get other packages on which the nepenthes package depends in order to waork properly.

I suggest uninstalling the nepenthes package. From a konsole (K>System>Konsole) type
                            Code:
                            dpkg -P nepenthes
Then you can use Adept or Synaptic to install the package properly.

Justin I don't think anyone's explained what adept does, hope you know/have figured it out after all this hassle, but in case you haven't:
1)Open Adept by hitting alt + f2 and typing 'adept'
                              2)Enter your password for sudo
3)In the search box, type 'nepenthes'
4)Adept will 'find' the package nepenthes, and all you have to do is right-click on the no change under 'Requested', change it to 'install', and hit the big 'Apply Changes' button up the top (it has a big green tick on it). Adept will download the package itself and (hopefully) will install it and fix dependencies etc. with no further input from you.

So yeah. The point of Adept is that you never have to go searching for un-obscure packages: they come to you. Wish it always worked... *grumblegrumble http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=7159.0 grumblegrumble*
