Shortcut after new Kubuntu install (after trying Ubuntu for 2 weeks)

I have tried Ubuntu 6.06 for two weeks and have been very impressed.

I did have some issues with mounting volumes. After lots of searching and reading someone informed me that:
"gnome aims for simplicity where KDE aims for functionality"

So here I am. Just installed Kubuntu and appreciate the cool look already.

QUESTION: If I now want support for MP3, etc... is there a shortcut like easyubuntu?
I have no clue about commands in termonal so any GUI to obtain all this stuff would be great.

Mr. impatient here wanted to try stuff:

    System sanity check: PASSED!

Your sources.list does not match your system configuration.
Either you have changed your sources.list or an system
upgrade has failed. EasyUbuntu will not run unless these are fixed!

Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this?

Automatix will be your best choice. Just do a search in the forums and several threads will show you where to d/l it. Also some walkthroughs exist.

      or jsut click on this

you know, Kubuntu has one advantage over Ubuntu when it comes to having multimedia support for restricted media formats. While in Ubuntu/GNOME, you have to download lots of GStreamer codecs/plugins, Kubuntu/KDE uses only one: libxine-extracodecs. This package is found in the multiverse component of the dapper repositories. I presume you know how to edit/modify your repositories? Just add the multiverse component to the line with the universe component, something like:
        deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper universe multiverse
You can do that either in Adept (Adept menu > Manage Repositories) or with a text editor like Kate (of course, with root privileges)

Just to show how fresh I am, 4 hours after installation of Kubuntu, I've finally found that tiny icon,. at the bottom of the desktop, to install (36) updates.
Maybe that will solve my EasyUbuntu problem.

EasyUbuntu is supposed to work for Kubuntu Dapper too.
          What I found on forums:
          Automatix for Ubuntu
Automatiks for Kubuntu but it hasn't been updated for Dapper.

I will attempt the libxine-extracodecs later...

Oh no, I am totally illiterate as far as linux goes. I was using XP until two weeks ago. I'm not ready to abandon it. I love my Mac laptop too.
One thing I already adore about linux is amaroK. Awesome MP3-player!

Re: Shortcut after new Kubuntu install (after trying Ubuntu for 2 weeks)

Sorry about the presumption. I wasn't in my "best" when I replied.
I haven't used EasyUbuntu, and have used Automatix only once in Breezy, so I really can't give any specific instructions for it. AFAIK, Automatix has a different name for Dapper, I think it's Komplete, but I'm not exactly sure.

Here's my take on doing it the direct way (without 3rd party apps/scripts)
NOTE: You can ignore this guide if you want and stick to EasyUbuntu and Automatix. The choice is yours to make. I'm just putting it here just in case you're interested to know how things are usually done in Linux/Kubuntu/KDE. One way or another, you're going to have to learn how to install stuff this way. Take your pick. (isn't this fun)

            1. Launch Adept (K Menu > System). It will ask for your administrator password.
            2. add multiverse to your repository: you can follow the guide here:
            https://help.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/desk...ositories.html
(You can scroll down to the part about adding extra repositories, but you can also read the introductory sections). Give special attention to the part about "to enable the Multiverse repository" near the bottom.
            3. After you have done Step 5 (clicking Apply and Close), click on Fetch Updates.
            4. Now look for the package named libxine-extracodecs. There's a search bar for that.
            5. Right-click on that package and choose Request Install.
            6. Click on Preview Changes at the top, and make sure that it's going to install it. A few other packages might be installed together with it, but don't worry about that.
            7. Click on Apply Changes.

            Hope that helps.

EDIT: Just some info on Automatix.
Here are some links about Automatix and Kubuntu:
            http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=203294
            http://www.getautomatix.com/wiki/ind...ix_for_Kubuntu

Komplete, the one I mentioned earlier, is an Automatix-like project specifically for Kubuntu:
            http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=6492.0
            It's still in beta, though.

              Hmmm,

Thanks Jucato. I'm still waiting for my updates to complete so I feel lucky I found your post before trying EasyUbuntu. Let's hope that nothing's been messed up yet by my previous attempt.

I'll let you know tomorrow how things worked out. It's getting late and I need to take a nap before the big game.

              Thanks for this! 8)

                Thanks Jucato,

I've got my MP3-support plus all the rest now. Great!
I was forced to change all the sources from au.ubuntu to uk.ubuntu
Some australian servers were always timing out. It drove me nuts for two hours.
Then, after changing to UK servers, all was perfect. For a freshman like me, it wasn't easy to find out where the problem was. But OK, I've learned some new stuff.

Then I went on to install firefox (Konqueror has limited functionality for Gmail accounts).
I have Firefox now IN KOREAN ! How the hell did that happen? I'm in Vietnam...
I'll try and change that later.

                Cheers, CDR

Re: Shortcut after new Kubuntu install (after trying Ubuntu for 2 weeks)

Btw, to make Konqueror work with Gmail, you can do these steps:
                  1. Open up Konqueror, go to Settings > Configure Konqueror > Browser Identification
                  2. Click on New in the Site Specific Identification area and enter the following details:
When Browsing the following site: google.com
Use the following identification: Safari 1.2.4 on Mac OS X
                  3. Click on OK, then Apply.

That will make Gmail work flawlessly in Konqueror. It's not that Konqueror has limited functionality with Gmail. It's the other way around. Google has decided not make Gmail (probably some other features, too) compatible with open-source browsers except Firefox, at least for now. (In general, they don't really have much support for Linux, until just very recently) Konqueror tries as much as possible to actually follow the web standards specified by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). But there are just some sites that really don't stick to that, so Konqueror has a hard time rendering them, and that, suprisingly, includes Gmail. So it's really up to the website maker to make sure that their site can work on almost all browsers. It just so happens that Gmail decided to just support the most popular ones.

Thank goodness we can "trick" Gmail into thinking we're using Mac OS X's Safari web browser (which is actually based on KHTML, the HTML rendering engine of KDE).
