There are a couple of ways you can install software, depending on what software it is (some can be found in the repositories, making installation a whole lot easier).

This is the Kubuntu Desktop Guide. This is very newbie oriented and mostly directs you to use the graphical apps, rather than the command line. You can view an offline version of this manual from the K Menu > Help > Kubuntu Documents > Kubuntu Desktop Guide.

Another excellent guide. Mostly done on the command line, which is a faster and more efficient way to install things. But it may not be for everyone.
