    Wireless card and some programs

I'm not sure if this question should go here or in the Software Support section, but here is the problem I'm having. I'm using a Dell Inspiron Laptop, and have been trying to get wireless to work ever since I started using Kubuntu. I installed Ubuntu and added Kubuntu on. I'm using Dapper. I recently started using an older wireless card that worked without a problem except for what I'm about to write.
Now the problem that I'm having is that I can access the internet if I use a KDE program (Kopete, Kontact, etc.), but I can't get Firefox or Thunderbird to connect.

What could be causing this? Is there anything I can do to fix this?

If you can reach the internet at all, I doubt that you've got a hardware problem. I would think there's something unusual about the setup of mozilla programs. Did you install the Kubuntu packages or did you try to install from the mozilla web site?

      Hi,

I agree askrieger, maybe you've also set something like proxy or something, no ?

      Good luck

I was afraid that you would say that. I will reask my question in the software area.

Originally I installed Ubuntu, then put Kubuntu on top of it. I have also tried just installing Kubuntu with no Ubuntu - both with the same resaults. I installed Firefox from the Kubuntu packages - should I try installing from Mozilla?

Frankly, I would have thought you'd have MUCH better luck installing the Ubuntu packages for Firefox and Thunderebird than you would doing a manual install from the Mozilla.org site.

At this point there's no need to start a new thread, I'll move the thread to the Dapper Software forum.

Funny thing is, I can only use Firefox, Thunderbird, etc. now only every once in a while. Most of the time they will try to connect to the server but time out, other time they will connect just fine (if a bit slowly) - I can't see any difference with what I'm doing that would cause it to start or stop working. Konqueror seems to work perfectly all the time though.

One more thing on this, this is a fresh install of Ubuntu, and I haven't even used the wireless card on it.

How do you connect to the net (telephone modem, DSL, cable)? Have you configured TB and FF properly for your Internet Service Provider? The tech support people at your ISP MAY be able to help you. Warning: If you use the word "Linux", they will tell you to get M$ Internet Explorer. So just ask for things like the name of the POP or IMAP server, the name of the SMTP server, whether you need a password to login to the mail servers, the IP addresses of their primary and secondary DNS servers, look at the configure dialogs to get the questions to ask.

My out going connection is DSL. I have a Netgear router that allows wireless and wired connections - that is what the computers connect to.
I have Kontact setup the sameway that I have have TB setup - I'm using a GMail account with POP. There is no special setup that is required to connect to the Netgear router. I can ping my internal http and ftp server, but can't connect to either of them with the FF, or Opera, but I can with Konqueror.
