I'm running kubuntu 6.06 on my Athlon xp-3000+ with 1gb ram and radeon 9600, which runs XP-sp2 quite fast. Initially, my install of kubuntu was slow to redraw graphics--the system itself seemed to be not that weighed down, but windows would smear when dragged, switching from Swiftfox to desktop to OOo to another app would make the windows "slide down" slowly repainting, and all in all the UI is sluggish. I updated everything, installed the K7 kernel, installed the latest ATI driver using instructions from the ubuntu forums, and aside from a marginal increase in the loading of OOo, the problem remains.
Any suggestions? Is there an alternative to the ATI official driver that could speed things up? (Am I correctly linking this to the graphics card?)
