NVidia kernel driver and X.org driver differences

After installing Kubuntu 6.06 from one of my CD's, I tried to install the NVidia drivers.  I got the latest ones from the NVidia website, and they installed fine, and X.org seemed to run ok.  But, upon rebooting, X stopped working, spewing out an error about different NVidia driver versions for the kernel and X (kernel: 7174, X.org: 8762).

Was the kernel that Kubuntu uses compiled with specific NVidia drivers or something? Because this is sure not making sense, and I have never had this problem with previous versions of Kubuntu.

Yes, you have to match up the driver and the kernel.
Maybe this will help you the same way that it helped me:
