Can you post the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list? You may be lacking sources in the file.

        Re: how to install firefox

Well judging by the look of that sources.list you haven't got any sources enabled.

All those lines with URL's in them should be "uncommented" i.e. delete the # that precedes the line because at the moment the # sign is causing the application to ignore the URL's.

        regards

Oh, and just to make the point, I've been using a sources.list that was on dig. It got URL's for just about everything.

          Code:
          # Based on source-o-matic ([url]http://www.ubuntulinux.nl/source-o-matic[/url]) list
            # Added extra repository
            #
            # If you get errors about missing keys, lookup the key in this file
            # and run these commands (replace KEY with the key number)
            #
            # gpg –keyserver subkeys.pgp.net –recv KEY
            # gpg –export –armor KEY | sudo apt-key add -

p.s. feel free to copy it and paste it to yours, but I'd suggest that you copied your existing one to /etc/apt/sources.list.old first or the url at the top of the sources.list that I've posted (the "source-o-matic" facility at ubuntu.nl) and you can select the type of stuff you think that you might do yourself and tell it to generate a more local (as in your geographic location) list and use that instead.

              Re: how to install firefox

Once you've enabled repositories, the easiest and best way to get Firefox installed is using this script.

If you use the Ubuntu Firefox and Firefox updates to a new version (even for security reasons), you won't get the updated version until at least a week later. If you use the script, you'll get the Mozilla version of Firefox and be able to update as Mozilla releases new versions.

Well you can do, but you have to make sure that you have the install CD listed as a source, then (in theory) it should ask you to put it in the drive and install it from there.

try automatix. it works great for those troublesome installs
Its great for Firefox/Thunderbird/audio-video codes/msfont/wine etc etc etc

Note: read the last question it will ask you (about sources.list)

I know that the question is superfluous, but did you type
                      Code:
                      sudo apt-get update
after you've changed the source.list file?
