KDE 3.5.3 broken screensaver - FIX HERE

There a bunch of threads on here about the screensavers in KDE 3.5.3 not working.

I missed not having a screensaver so much that I decided to try and get it working using the latest KDE source. Somewhat suprisingly I managed it.

You can read all about it and grab the flies to hopefully fix it on your system at

I'm afraid this solution did not work for me. The dependency_libs line in your version of /usr/lib/kde3/kdesktop.la includes references to a number of dependencies (/home/mike/kdebase-552243...) which don't seem to be included on your page.

      Darn it.

Thank you for the information, you're the first to give any feedback. I've altered the page to indicate they don't work for anyone except me.

Guess I'm not quite as clever as I thought I was late last night

Hmmm. Well I've had change to try the files out on a few of other machines now also running Dapper and KDE 3.5.3 and on each of them I've been able to make the KDE screensaver work by just replacing the /usr/lib/libkdeinit_kdesktop.so file with the one I compiled and leaving /usr/lib/kde3/kdesktop.la alone.

Dunno why it didn't work for you underpope but then I'm still somewhat suprised it works at all for me.

          Hi, arizonagroovejet

Tried your fix and it worked perfectly for me. Thank you so much, I really missed my slideshow screensaver. You now have someone in Australia that thinks you're a legend.

          Thanks again and Cheers

              Hi

My results. It seems that activation takes place at the time for which I have set it, but invariably this is a black screen, irrespective of the screensaver I have selected. Very odd!

              Anyone else having this problem?

                  Hi Ian ( The Liquidator)

Had the same problem, went into set up and unticked the 2 ticks
seems to be working for me now

                  good luck

Re: KDE 3.5.3 broken screensaver - FIX HERE

                    Worked for me as well.

I habitually use the clock screensaver, set so that it's the smallest clock possible, moving around the screen.

The only difference being that it doesn't move around the screen as quickly as it's done before, but thats not a problem.

The screensaver starts fine, it's tells the time (it started before, but it would freeze the time/movement) and it moves albeit slowly, but who cares, thats the point of a screensaver.

Well done, and TVM for the fix.

                    regards

{edit} I thought it was working when I typed the above i.e. I'd reduced the starting time for the screensaver to 1 minute. It did appear to work, though I now find that it's not actually working. If I do the high tec thing and hit the O.N.O.F.F. I have to presume that it should still start, well it had, but it had frozen in the same position/time (yes I still have the clock screensaver set) now I come to use the PC and it's just a black screen so I'm presuming that it's still not happening properly.

                    Just thought I'd report that{/edit}

                      Hi

Sorry, I'm afraid it still does not work for me. The screensaver works if I select "Test" or if I lock the screen, but the screensaver will not start on its own. Just a blank screen

I was dumb enough to think it will work on my 64bits but it was not... Of course, it's compiled for 32 bits...
Nevermind, I will wait for kde3.5.4 I don't need so much screensaver.

                        Cheers

Ah! Got it. It worked for me when I restored my backup copy of kdesktop.la and downloaded your compiled libkdeinit_kdesktop.so again. Thanks.

                            Ian,

I had the same problem, but I seem to have fixed it.

First, make sure that the libkdeinit_kdesktop file that Arizona compiled is executable on your system:

                            $ sudo chmod +x /usr/lib/libkdeinit_kdesktop.so

                            Then restart KDE.

I have the same problem, followed the above suggestion, and still nothing, only a blank screen
