    Annoying Harddrive access

It seems that Kubuntu keeps spinning up on of my hard drives (I have two), lets it spin down and then up again. Apperantly it does not read anything or access the harddrive (the IDE-Led is not blinking), it only spins the harddrive up. This is not only annoying but I also fear that it will ruin the disk.
Since a few days Kubuntu accesses both harddrives right after startup for a long time, thats annoying too.
So, if anyone could help stop this, I would be glad.
I searched the internet and this forum, but I couldn't find anything.
I'm pretty sure its some backup program or loganalyser (not Ksyslog, I tried that).
Maybe its the swap space thats accessed?
Well, I have no idea and no way to find out.
    Greetings,

    dft

Could be HAL/udev polling your drives. I wish I could tell you more, but udev changed substantially in Dapper, and there is no useful documentation to clue us poor lusers in. Try running the 'top' command, that should tell you what's hitting your hard drive. or, if you're prefer a nice graphical tool, ksysguard does the same thing, and is more readable.
