Again MP3 and MPEG

Hi, I'm a new Kubuntu user, everithing looks fine except multimedia.
As written in other messages I must install libxine extracodecs for mp3 files, but Adept doen't find this package. I enabled the Universe Multiverse repositoires but nothing changed. Is the same with DVD. I can see DVIX without sound.
Can someone help me ?

OMG, I'm so sorry I forgot to ask the obvious. Are you running Kubuntu 5.10 Breezy (since you posted here)? If you are, please follow this link: http://wiki.kubuntu.org/RestrictedFormats and scroll down to the sections that are marked specifically for Kubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger).

The process for enabling MP3 support in Breezy and Dapper are different, and the repositories are also different. so libxine-extracodecs won't be found in Breezy.

I see the problem. You have enabled the multiverse repositories for dapper-backports only, not for the main dapper repositories.

Change these:

deb http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe
deb-src http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe

To these:

deb http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe multiverse
deb-src http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe multiverse

Then in Adept, click on Fetch Updates first, then look of libxine-extracodecs. That should work. This will also install all the codecs you need, except for Microsoft specific ones like WMA and WMV. To be able to play those, you need to download and install the w32codecs from the link I posted above.

the sources.list is a file owned by root (the administrator) so you need to run it as root. I would teach you two methods. You choose which one you like better.

Method A: Using Adept
1. Run Adept
2. Click on the Adept menu at the top and choose "Manage Repositories"
3. Click the line containing "deb http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe"
4. Now, click on the word "universe" near the end of the line. Add the word multiverse and press Enter. Make sure that "universe" wasn't deleted. That part should now read "universe multiverse"
5. Do the same for the line containing "deb-src http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe". Again, the last part of the line should read "universe multiverse"
6. Now click on the "Apply" button at the bottom, and then Close.
7. Click on "Fetch Updates" at the top.

This will refresh your repositories and you will be able to find libxine-extracodecs.

Method B: Manually editing sources.list
1. Press Alt+F2, this will launch a Run command dialog box.
2. Type

kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list

to run kate as root, and open the sources.list. It will ask for a password. I suppose you know what enter here.
3. edit the lines that I told you.
4. Save the file and close Kate
5. Open up Adept and click on Fetch Updates at once.

Yes it helps !! Now I can hear music, and see a DVD with Xine. Only Amarok still doesn't work. As soon as I open a musical file with Amarok the message "playlist finished" appear.
Any help for this ?

Check Amarok if it's setup to use the proper engine (Xine):
Settings > Configure Amarok > Engine > make sure the Sound Engine is pointing to xine Engine, and just use Autodect for the output plugin.

If there's no xine Engine entry, then the amarok-xine package probably isn't installed. But that would be weird since it's installed by default in any Dapper installation.
