    some games install questions?

I'm trying to get gnubg, supertux, crack-attack and frozen bubble installed.

What should be pretty basic stuff, except I can only find .debs for gnubg, crack-attack and frozen-bubble.

If I try to install them, I'm getting dependency problems which I haven't got a clue about with a debian based system like kubuntu.

Maybe someone could point me in the right direction

    regards

I've installed frozen-bubble and kdegames with no problems. Can you copy down the exact wording of the 'dependency problems you're experiencing?

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of gnubg:
      gnubg depends on libart2 (>= 1.2.13.5); however
      Package libart2 is not installed.
      gnubg depends on libgtkglext1; however:
      Package libgtkglext1 is not installed.
      gnubg depends on libreadline4 (>= 4.3-1); however:
      Package libreadline4 is not installed.
      dpkg: error processing gnubg (--install):
      dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
      Errors were encountered while processing:
      gnubg
      Press <enter> to exit.......
is what is coming up from the Kubuntu Package manager>install package selection after "right clicking".

Now when checking, I can see that libreadline5 is installed, but libreadline4, libart2 and libgtkglext1 (I hope I've spelled all the package names correctly as I had to type them all by hand, "it" (the dialogue box) wouldn't let me copy/paste) don't seem to be available from any of the repositories that I have listed in the apt-sources.list (got all the ones that installed by default plus plf).

So I'm presuming that it should (as I understand it) just be a case of finding the correct repository - but there do seem to be so many potential candidates.

I have had a dig around to see if I can find them as single packages or something similar, but that doesn't seem to be available.

Maybe you have some idea of what my "way ahead" might be.

I had to get rid of the frozen bubble and supertux packages that I had located as synaptic kept telling me that I had some broken packages in my system (I can always find them again I should think).

All thge games you want are available in the Universe repositoriy
        https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AddingReposi...epositories%29

http://packages.ubuntu.com/ is a good place to search

The file you are trying to install via the right-click might not be a version compatible with dapper or Kubuntu.

As for the copy/paste thing, my favorite-est, most cherished linux feature (which I miss greatly whn I am at work with a Win XP machine, is the copy and paste method:

Simply highlight words or phrases with the mouse. Double-click on a word, it is highlighted, triple clicking highlights the entire line. That puts it into your clipboard, no need for right-click or keyboard shortcuts. the clipboard tool on the taskbar has a memory and saves the last few copies. Then all you need to do is click the middle mouse button where you want it to be pasted, and viola!

        for example:
(Reading database ... 125473 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace keytouch 2.1.4-0ubuntu1 (using .../keytouch_2.1.4-0ubuntu1_i386.deb) ...
        Stopping keytouch: nothing to do\nkeytouch-init.
        Unpacking replacement keytouch ...
        Setting up keytouch (2.1.4-0ubuntu1) ...
        Starting keytouch: keytouch-init.

        Press <enter> to exit...

          Re: some games install questions?

Thanks for the pointer claydoh, downloading them now 8)

That first link you posted, well I started following the instructions, but when I had the repositories open from the settings menu, the button suggested by the link wasn't there, I'm not sure if that would be an Ubuntu Vs. Kubuntu thing (doubt it), more of a version thing.

In the end, I just found the main repositories and selected them one by one, and after "main" and "restricted", I added universe and multiverse as well, and when I did the "reload" bingo! the "necessary" appeared.

I did get a couple of warnings, one that mentioned one of the repos' not having bz2 packages available, and a second one about duplicate entries to the /apt/sources.list

If it's not being too cheeky, could you have a quick look and see if theres anything that needs removing

          deb cdrom:[Kubuntu 6.06 _Dapper Drake_ - Release i386 (20060531)]/ dapper main restricted
          deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ dapper free non-free
          deb-src http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ dapper free non-free

deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted universe multiverse
          deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted universe multiverse

          deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe

deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse
          deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse

          deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security main
          deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security main
          deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security universe
          deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security universe

          deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-latest/ dapper main
          deb-src http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-latest/ dapper main
Apart from the changes that I mentioned above, and adding the plf and kde-latest, it's pretty much "as is" from the install. Being a recent "inductee" to kubuntu/ubuntu and only ever "sniffed" debian once before for a couple of days (actually it was an HD install of knoppix), I'm very unfamiliar with this type of package management (most recently having used SuSE 10.1 and Mandriva 2006) I wouldn't know a duplicate if it "stared me in the face".

            Cheeky is fine
Which repo has the missing bz2 error?

The rest, with my comments to fix the redundant repo, looks good

            deb cdrom:[Kubuntu 6.06 _Dapper Drake_ - Release i386 (20060531)]/ dapper main restricted
            deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ dapper free non-free
            deb-src http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ dapper free non-free

deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted universe multiverse
            ^^
This is the duplicate line, it should be deb-src

deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted universe multiverse
            deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted universe multiverse

            deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe
            ^^
this is also redundant as 'universe' is included in the line you need to edit above, so it can be removed

deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse
            deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse

            deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security main
            deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security main
            deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security universe
            deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security universe

            deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-latest/ dapper main
            deb-src http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-latest/ dapper main

              Re: some games install questions?

Thankyou very much for that, I've done the changes you suggested and it all seems to be working fine - I still get an error/warning/reminder about gpg keys, but I just OK that and all is well.

I can't say which repo gave me the thing about bz2 packages, as I haven't managed to repeat what I did.

Out of the whole of this new kubuntu install, now the only thing I can't seem to work out is why the screensaver is a little temperamental. Sometimes it works, others not. I did read something about KDE 3.5.3 having a bug that meant screensavers didn't start period, but I've seen it appear sometimes etc etc.

I also just installed the kpowersaver module/facility so I'll have a little play with that and see what happens.

              Otherwise, it's pretty damn good.

              regards

                Cool!

Your gpg keys thing is OK, your system just doesn't yet "trust" your ubuntu-plf repo, but I don't see where to do that on their site

I think the screensaver issue is a known bug out there, mine do not start either, but I have not looked into it yet (don't really care )

                  Re: some games install questions?

The workaround I use for screensavers is to turn off the KDE screensaver and install xscreensaver, which contains the same stuff, has its own nice config dialog (screensaver-demo), and works well on KDE.

You should also try out the really slick screensavers module for xscreensaver (package rss-glx).
