KDE 3.5.3 has a broken kdesktop

Fix the kdesktop package in KDE 3.5.3 with the latest svn snapshot. There is a bug which doesn't allow any screensaver to run.

For more info see: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=128610 .

I have this same problem myself, but didn't like to post a question because I thought with Dapper being released there would be more important things for people to reply to than "poor Lowey's screensaver doesn't work".

How would I go about doing that? I don't know what an svn snapshot is. Or would it just be better for me to wait until the package is fixed in the repositories?

    Thanks for your help

Just wanted to bump this. There seems to be a few threads on both forums with people having trouble with both screensaver and power saving.

      Thanks for your time

I think everyone who is using 3.5.3 have both these problems....

The screensaver not working means that the terminal doesn't get locked (if you choose to lock when the screensaver activates)....

        And that has security implications....

Hope they update the repositories soon

I'm using 3.5.3 and have no such problem...

Lowey: The best thing to do is wait, IMO. Any important security fixes will appear in the repositories, and it gets real messy real quickly trying to compile from source, particularly something as big as KDE.

            Thanks for the reply, James.

I was starting to think that myself. I have a very nice system with everything working at the minute and it would be a shame to break it trying to fix something silly like that.

            Thanks for your time.

            Cheers

              bumpity bump.

So according the to KDE bug tracking system this issue is resolved. Anyone know how long until we'll see the fix in the repos? I'm wondering if we'll have to wait for KDE 3.5.4 which will presumably include the fix.

Another bump. According to another thread, arizonagroovejet has created a library fix for KDE that solves this problem, but it is 32 bit so won't help all of the people who use the AMD64 release.

Upgraded today 06/26 without any problems. Looks like bugs have been fixed.

Could you clarify what you mean by that? Do you mean you installed my fix file or something else - if so what? 'Upgraded' makes it sound like you installed some new KDE packages but I'm not seeing any available in adept-notifer.

                    thanks,

                    mike

                      Let me please clarify.

What I meant was I upgraded to KDE v3.5.3 from the version that came with the Kubuntu 6.0.6 install without any problems or resultant issues. Smooth upgrade and non of the abovementioned problems either. Looks like any bugs there were have been fixed in currently available update.

Hmmmm. Curious. I suspect though that you are just not experiencing the problem for some reason and the problem has not been fixed in the latest updates. I think this because:

1] I had a machine running 3.5.2 which I just updated to 3.5.3 and it still has the problem. Also on a machine that was already running 3.5.3 and has the problem adept says there are no updates available, i.e. it already has the latest packages and still has the problem.
2] KDE have not, as far as I know, released stable code containing the fix yet. My fix involved building the relevant file from a snapshot which is considered unstable code. So I don't see how the fix could have be in the Kubuntu packages unless they've repackaged using unstable code, which would seem unwise.
3] Looking at one of the repos http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-353/...apper/kdebase/ the newest kdestop package (the bug is in the kdesktop package) is dated the 14th June. I made my fix on the 18th at which point I had the latest kdestop package installed.

It sounds to me like the problem does not actually affect everyone and you are one of those who it doesn't. Which I guess is very nice for you I wonder why you don't have the problem when so many (and not just on Kubuntu) do.

Good luck in resolving the issues you have.

Hello there! I have the same problem with the screensaver afer updating to 3.5.3. Tried arizonagroovejet's fix (libkdeinit_kdesktop.so fix) to no avail... the screensaver kicks in but only to a black screen. Checked out the repos and the kdesktop.deb version is the same one I have installed. Maybe the problem has to do with the type of video card you use The energy saver applet (to shut down the monitor) doesen't work either, and it default's back to 30 min.

Any news about the fix from KDE
