    KDE 3.5.3 Repository Question

Hi! When it comes to updating major pieces of software in the default repositories, I'm a complete newbie. Does anyone know if / when KDE 3.5.3 will be available from the default repositories?

    Re: KDE 3.5.3 Repository Question

KDE 3.5.3 didn't make it to the official Dapper repositories (it was released just a fews days before Dapper was released). However, the Kubuntu devs made a special repository for upgrading to KDE 3.5.3.

    Here's announcement for that: http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-353.php

Just follow the instructions regarding downloading Jonathan Riddell's key, then add any of the repositories listed to your repositories (either through Adept > Manage Repositories or manually in sources.list). Just choose one of those repositories listed, you don't need to add them all.

      Thanks!

I'm mainly asking about the default repositories getting the new version because of future upgrading concerns. I imagine the default repos will be updated as security and stability bugs are fixed in future versions of KDE, and I'd prefer not to use a new repository for each subsequent bugfix version of KDE, you know?

        Re: KDE 3.5.3 Repository Question

The thing is, until the new Kubuntu version is released (Edgy Eft), I think they can't add new versions of apps/packages, only minor security/bug fixes on the Ubuntu/Kubuntu side. There are Ubuntu backports repositories that "sometimes" package new versions, though. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this). It has something to do, I think, with the release and feature freeze process. I'm not really sure about the specifics, though.

Regarding KDE, anyway, you don't have to worry about adding new repositories each time they release a new version (a minor minor version?). Just add the new repository and the package manager will automatically use whichever is newer (unless you specifically force it not to). And as far as compatibility, you can rest assured. Those repositories come from the Kubuntu devs themselves, and are, in a way, official repositories, so they naturally make sure that it will not have upgrading issues in the future.

          To juvato:
I tried upgrading yesterday and again today. It hangs on the columbia mirror for some reason. Is the repostory "offline" or just not there anymore. The rest download fine. I just don't want to install without "everything". Here ist my list:

            Re: KDE 3.5.3 Repository Question

Well, for one I'm not sure you're supposed to have that many repositories for KDE 3.5.3. They are just mirrors, that is, alternative locations where you could download. So you don't have to include all of them. In fact, it would be probably better if you just included only one.

How about trying to use just the main 3.5.3 repository? The Columbia mirror is probably down or experiencing heavy traffic.

Thanks that worked. I just copied all the new rep. into my list. Instead of the main. I guess columbia is a bit overworked)
