"True" Transparency without Compiz/XGL

Is there a way for True Transparency to be enabled? I tried Vista on a friends computer (and later installed on mine for "further testing" (actually, just to play the inkball game)) and transparent windows is very cool and undistracting (for my young eyes). It's a lot easier to concentrate with them!

So now I would like to know how to enable it. From googling and looking in these forums, I've seen this guide for SuSE: http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/lo...hp/t31862.html and this picture in our gallery: http://kubuntuforums.net/index.php?i...to_show&ida=19

Will the latter guide (or the first guide) work in the current Kubuntu Dapper state?

Yes, the instructions on editing your xorg to enable compositing should work
I will enable it here on my system, (XP2700, GF 6200) and see if it works any better than in breezy

XGL is much much much smoother and nicer, though the transparency bits in compositing is nice, I still find it feels like it is "blinking" as compared to XGL. If all you need is some shadow and transparency, then compositing might be the easiest way to go

do remember that ATI cards dont yet support composite extensions... so you can only get it to work with Nvidia cards(not sure about intel)

Go to www.compiz.net. Under Compiz Packages, jesper has built a kubuntu specific package
