    Re: mp3 player

Thanks for the lesson, time for a fresh install I reckon. Think I'll try an OS that plays mp3 out the box or "off the cd".

      edit:
Why reinstall an entire os over 1 text file

      Very strange
I just followed what you did to get the error, but was able to edit and save the file with no problems. (you don't have to reboot for any of these things, btw)

So lets try this then: Open the sources.list as described above, and then save it with a different name, such as sources.list-orig

Then clear all the text out, and then copy and paste this in its place:
      Code:
      # deb cdrom:[Kubuntu 6.06 _Dapper Drake_ - Alpha i386 (20060409)]/ dapper main restricted

      deb [url]http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/[/url] dapper main restricted
      deb-src [url]http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/[/url] dapper main restricted

      ## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the
      ## distribution.
      deb [url]http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/[/url] dapper-updates main restricted
      deb-src [url]http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/[/url] dapper-updates main restricted

      deb [url]http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/[/url] dapper universe multiverse

deb [url]http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/[/url] dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse

      deb [url]http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu[/url] dapper-security universe
      deb-src [url]http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu[/url] dapper-security universe
and save it as /etc/apt/sources.list, then open see if adept opens.

If it does, use it to install Synaptic , which is a lot more polished and easier to use than adept in its current version, imnsho, most especially in terms of repository management

          Re: mp3 player

I'm back. Downloaded kubuntu 6.06 beta2, It crashed 3 times on install. Dug out 6.04 and after two hours of updates and re-installing my hardware, I'm ready to go again. Well since libxine-extracodecs in not available on the us.repository I need to get a repo that has it. Any suggestions. Spell it out what I should list on the adept block for adding please.

            Re: mp3 player

Thanks claydough. I have libxine-extracodecs off your post. Took all day, guess I'd better pay attention. Now I have to move all those mp3 from my ext. drive again. Gonna buy me a pci usb 1.0 to 2.0 adapter first. Took nearly 6 hours the first time.
