    Install XFCE over KDE?

    Hi,

I just upgraded to dapper, running KUbuntu...
I am now considering the option of switching over to XFCE for a while... Do you think it would work if I installed XFCE (xubuntu-desktop package) over KDE? or is it good only over Gnome?

Please help me take this decision...

    Prav.

    It's good. Do this, though:

Go to KMenu > System > Konsole and copy and paste these commands
    Code:
    sudo aptitude update
    sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop
Log out, select Session, select XFCE, and log in again.

    Do not do
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
Otherwise, Xubuntu will be very hard to remove if you later decide you don't like it.

        Re: Install XFCE over KDE?

There's no difference in terms of what gets installed.

But if you later decide, "Eh, I don't like XFCE, really. And not only do I dislike XFCE--I don't even want it on my system any more," aptitude will make it possible to uninstall Xubuntu.

        Apt-get will not.

Basically, xubuntu-desktop isn't a real package. It's a pointer to a bunch of packages. If you install xubuntu-desktop through apt-get (or Adept or Synaptic Package Manager), apt-get (or whatever) will install the pointer and the packages it points to. If you install it through aptitude, aptitude will install the pointer and the packages and remember that the two are associated.

So if you later uninstall with apt-get, it'll remove only the pointer. All the rest of the packages will still be there. Aptitude will remember what's associated and remove everything that came along with the pointer.

You cannot, however, install with apt-get and uninstall with aptitude and expect to get the same result.

          aha... thanks a lot...

          now some more Qs...

I have read (somewhere on Ubuntu wiki) that XUbuntu is gonna run from Gnome and with XFCE. But I am using KDE, so what difference can I expect?

Also, I am slowly shifting off from MS-Windows to (K/X)Ubuntu... so I am installing many essentials... So here is the second Question. Can I mix Gnome-based apps with KDE-based ones? I know its possible, but do u think its good, as I read somewhere that it might lead to crashes!@#

Please reply... And BTW, I am going ahead with the aptitude install of XFCE on Ubuntu

            Hi,

Xubuntu desktop will install whatever it needs so you shouldn't really see any difference, for example, I have a dapper install, with ubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop installed and it's working well...

About mixing applications between gnome and kde, the only matter you should get is that the non-native one will be less polished, for example if you will launch a gnome application from kde, it will look like from another galaxy that's it

            Cheers

Xubuntu runs separately, just as Kubuntu does. XFCE, Gnome, and KDE are all separate desktop environments.

KDE applications crash. It has nothing to do with mixed environments. Non-native applications will look ugly, though, and they may load up a little more slowly.
