Problems I have found in kubuntu beta

Problems I´ve found in kubuntu beta:

    1) Is still difficult to access to FAT32 partitions to write as user. You can go to System Settings in the menu -> Discs and filesystems -> Then select the vfat partition and try to change something to be able to write anything as user. I have tried changing the options "Files belong to user" and "Files belong to group" to users(100) and to other options, of course generic, I want it to be writable by any user not only me. I knew the trick and kept the user and group owner to root and then I went to Advanced -> Options and I put there "umask=000" the magic string to get things working. There should be some option "Make writable by all users" when a vfat partition is detected to make things easy.

    2) There is still no way to graphically assign persistent names to network interfaces. When you install you are asked what will be your primary interface, the one you select will be named as eth0 and the following eth1, etc does not matter whether is a LAN or wireless card. Maybe wireless interfaces should be named as wlan. Yes, there is a way to reasign interfaces but a normal user won´t figure it out. You have to edit /etc/iftab and choose a network interface name for each mac address that belongs to a network device, and then you have to reboot. There should some graphical way to do that. Maybe ubuntu chooses that names carefully and wisely, but some times results confusing and differente types of network interfaces are named as the type (for example LAN and Wireless). The network configuration menu in system settings could show you that mac address for each interface and let you rename it as well.

    3) Adept shows the error "Could not find mime type application/octet-stream" and "No mime types installed".

    4) In system settings the Screen module cannot be loaded. Sometimes the windows get out of screen. It shouldn´t complain since I am using 1024x768 that I think is enough to display all options in the screen and there is no reason to make windows bigger than that. There is people with even less resolution. In my desktop PC I have 800x600 (isn´t TFT) that is the most common among that kind of monitors. In worst cases there should be a scroll bar in the window, not simply resize that windows to higher size than the resolution.

    5) When you install ubuntu you are asked for proxy. I really don´t know what this is useful for, in system settings and/or konqueror that changes are not updated. The wget and apt-get obtain no benefits of this settings unless you enter it manually.

    6) The first time you try to configure your network in systems settings konqueror crashes (the typical backtrace window) but gbd is not installed, so is not useful. Should gdb be included? Should there be a better error reporting tool so user can automatically send error reports when a program crashes?

    7) In system settings should be at least the same options that in Control Center, for example an deep configuration of the smb.conf cannot be done in system settings, but can in Control Center. As it is shorted in the kmenu, it seems that System Settings is the replacement for control center and then this does not exist anymore, but it still exists and allows you to tweak even more things. I have discovered that adding the preferences applet to the kicker (taskbar). Now the control center, that is one of the best ways to configure your system, has been renamed to "preferences" and hidden in a submenu as an applet. I think that does not help users.

In the smb.conf you have to edit the line that says "passdb backend = tdbsam" where it should be "passdb backend = smbpasswd".

    8) The problem "KDEINIT could not launch kate" or something is very common if you try to edit text files running konqueror as root.
