I probably don't understand some things about this -- here are my questions:

1. Edgy is not a long-term supported release -- it is 1.5 years old and not actively supported today. Why did you choose Edgy, instead of Hardy Heron, which is current and will be supported for 2 years?

2. Why did you replace the source list that was installed with Edgy? Can't you use the installation routine to tell it your location and have it set up the correct default sources that way? Then (after installation) you can go to the medibuntu site and add their repository as per the "Repository How To" page.

First, edit your sources.list file and add your two-letter country code plus a period after each http://
Assuming you are in the United States, each edited entry would then look like this:

## Uncomment the following two lines to fetch updated software from the network

and see if all goes well. Then proceed to re-add the medibuntu repository with:

sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring

and then once again, update with:

sudo apt-get update

I have tried the sources.list file posted by Snowhog with my country code (ca.) and then, after I got another bunch of errors as a result of "apt-get update", I tried again with the us. country code. Again only errors when trying to update.

The same goes for Medibuntu.

I would have tried Hardy but 2 reasons stopped me in the first place:

1) apparently winmodem 56k drivers are not longer supported (a regression or nobody uses them anymore ?)

2) I still use an ATI 9200 Radeon series AGP 8x card and apparently, according to some posts, the fglrx driver in Hardy does not support my card anymore. Since it was a pain installing the card in WinXP in the first place, I did not want to start all over again...

But maybe those issues have been fixed and the posts about them are already old ?

As Edgy is no longer being 'actively' supported, the repositories may no longer be being kept. But, you might want to try the 'old-release' repositories. See Edgy Repositories - Need to mirror from someone on the Ubuntu Forums.
