"Default Applications" ignored?

I have tried modifying System Settings > User Account > Default Applications, but it does not work as expected (Flight 5)

I have entered /usr/bin/mozilla-thunderbird for email client and /usr/bin/firefox for web browser.

If I click a mailto: link in Konqueror, nothing is started (it seems to try for a while though). If I click a mailto: link in Firefox, nothing visible happens at all.

When I click an ordinary http link in Thunderbird, I would have expected Firefox to start with above settings, but Konqueror is started instead.
