    Re: No Picture With DVD

    Ok,
Due (I think) to an id10t error, I had to re-install Kubuntu. I restores my sources.list to the one I posted earlier in this topic. I also added the medibuntu repository and gpg key. I installed w32codecs and libdvdcss2. I still can not find or install libxine1-plugins, either through adept manager or apt-get. Nor can I find any of the plugins that make up the libxine1-plugins. I am back to the point that I can hear the soundtrack, but see a blue screen instead of the movie.

I really do appreciate all of your efforts to help me on this!

    Thanks,

    Steve

      Sorry to here that.

In an attempt to 'test it out,' I installed Dapper on my PC last night. It took a long time to update, as you can imagine. Long story short - lost access to my Gutsy installation - for a bit. Got that fixed. Ended up removing Dapper.

I've updated my HOWTO for DVD playback. I've made it clear that it works for Feisty and Gutsy, and that it proably works for Edgy as well. But, I don't think it will work for Dapper or earlier releases. The fact that Dapper's packages don't list the ones I posted seems to confirm this.

I haven't found any good posts or links that describe getting Dapper's Kaffeine configured to play DVDs. I'm sure it must be doable, else why was Kaffeine included in the distribution?

Sorry that I couldn't get you to the point where you could see the video. But, having it play the sound with the blue screen is actually a good sign. It means you aren't very far away from the solution.

What PC (or laptop) do you have? Make and model? Do you know what video card/chip you have in the machine?

She's a home built. Stats are:
        AMD AthlonXP 2000+ CPU
        FIC AN11 MoBo
        1.25GB DDR RAM
        Nvidia fx 5500 video card
        DVD-ROM
        DVD-RW
        Floppy
        Acer AL2002W 17" LCD monitor
        80GB hard drive

I built her around 2001, and just keep upgrading. I've thought about building a newer one, but this one still works. Is it possible that problem might be solved if I install the Nvidia drivers? Probably not, but it's a thought.

That's a distinct possibility. What drivers are you using now?

Another test you can try, is to install VLC and see if you can play the DVD with it.

Do you have Universe & Multiverse repositories enable ? I think the package you need to install is libxine-extracodecs for Dapper.

See his Reply #12 for the repositories active in his sources.list (both are there).

                A possibility??

                Installing libdvdcss2

If you are using Ubuntu 6.06 "Dapper Drake":

Install the libdvdread3 package from the universe repository.

                Open a terminal and type:
                Code:
                sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples/install-css.sh
and press the enter key. This will download and install libdvdcss2.
Check Adept Manger to see if you have the libdvdread3 package installed. If not, follow the instructions above.

                  Re: No Picture With DVD

I have libdvdcss2, libdvdread3, and libxine-extracodecs installed through adept manager. They were the first things I installed after I re-installed Kubuntu.

You think maybe I should just try upgrading to 7.10?

                      Re: No Picture With DVD

Upgrading to Gutsy can only be done from Feisty. You could, of course, do a full installation - not an upgrade - but unless you have a separate /home partition, you'll loose everything in your /home directory. The other option is to upgrade incrementally, from Dapper to Edgy, to Feisty, to Gutsy. A very slow process.

                        Ok, Bud,
Looks like this thing is a wrap. Just for the heck of it, I installed the Nvidia restricted drivers from a howto I came across here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia . I figured, it can't hurt. Well, after I rebooted, I tried a dvd, and it is playing nicely in kaffeine (I'm wqtching it right now). You don't know how much I appreciate your efferts to help me with this!

                        Thanks again,

                        Steve

Now, I can go see what other trouble I can get into next..... I'm keeping notes, so if I have these problems in the future, I have an idea what to do to fix it.
