    killing amarok forever

    Hi all:

This is for google lookups. If you have amarok and hate it, or it doesn't work (like on this dapper machine,) you can get rid of it forever, no matter how stipud KDE gets. Remember, if you try to remove this nasty program from your computer, it will also remove KDE! YIKES! So, without killing the system, here is what I finally did to cure my blues. . .

Become super user in a console or xterminal: sudo bash
(you can use Konsole for this)

Now move into the directory where amarok is run from: cd /usr/bin

Now rename amarok: mv amarok amarok_OLD

Now link a better program so that if amarok is called, it will start
the program that can really play mp3/ogg/wav etc. In my case, that is xmms player. Kaffeine player also works really well too. If you don't have xmms or Kaffeine installed already, then you can install it with adept package manager.

Here's how I did it for xmms (still in /usr/bin directory): ln /usr/bin/xmms amarok

    OR

If you want to use Kaffeine and not xmms then: ln /usr/bin/kaffeine amorok

Now, when I click on an mp3 or ogg file, xmms (or Kaffeine, depending which one you chose) opens and plays the file. No more amarok sitting on my taskbar doing nothing and hogging cpu time!

One final note. I couldn't make KDE use xmms or kaffeine, even though I manaully made them both try to be the default player. I think easyubuntu munged this system long ago, so this is my cure until the next LTS comes along and I wipe this out and install that.

hope this is helpful to others.

    regards

    Re: killing amarok forever

Disregarding the amarok angst, this is not the proper way to remove Amarok. An update to Amarok will undo what you have made, and Amarok will still be updated, because it is still installed.

The simplest way is to uninstall Amarok. That's it. No more Amarok. The system will use the next app in line that can handle audio, which would probably be Kaffeine on a a default install.

I don't know how you tried to make XMMS or Kaffeine the default player, though, because if done properly, it will work, even if Amarok is still installed.

      Greetings Jucato:

"Remember, if you try to remove this nasty program from your computer, it will also remove KDE! YIKES!"

This is why removing the program is not possible. It's an ugly work-around is all.

That is not true. Removing Amarok will only remove the kubuntu-desktop metapackage. A metapackages is just a package that points to and installs other packages (or other metapackages). Any metapackage can be removed with no problem.

Think of it this way. KDE itself (pure, unadulterated KDE) doesn't even require Amarok to be there. Amarok isn't even part of the core KDE apps or modules. It's an extragear app, a sort of outside branch of KDE apps.

Bottom line, removing Amarok will not remove KDE. At most, it will just remove metapackages.

(And if it does remove KDE, it should be reported as a bug because that is not the correct behavior.)

Thanks for posting that info. I didn't try it the other night once I noticed it wanted to yank KDE. I was down that road many years ago and wasn't paying attention and good ole apt-get done got me! Heehee When I realized what had happened, I was looking at almost a blank laptop, on a dialup account no less. .

Why would anyone running (k)ubuntu want to remove amarok. In my opinion it's the best thing since sliced bread and it plays my 30 gig of really questionable taste music really well.
