Weird. Maybe it happened after an update, it's worked fine for the past year or so. I have a Realtek ALC850 rev 0 onboard sound chip according to alsamixer. In alsamixer the volumes are all up plenty but they all say they are '[Off]' in the Item field, except for Master which i presume is the only one currently on. PCM might need to be on, how do i do this? I've checked in my user profile and 'audio' hasn't been removed from my list.

An update must have altered it. And yes i do feel daft before you ask.
