How does Edgy font selection work with Firefox 2?

I just installed all my Windows TrueType fonts, and suddenly the homepage of The New York Times (ht_tp://www.nytimes.com) is different. Some portions of the page which formerly displayed in Times New Roman (or something similar) are now in a small-sized condensed serif font which looks terrible and is barely readable. The stylesheet (ht_tp://graphics8.nytimes.com/css/common/global.css) calls for a "Georgia, serif" font for body text. I think what happened is that the order of font search got changed so that the first serif font found is one of the condensed Roman fonts in /usr/share/fonts, when /usr/local/share/fonts is where my Times New Roman from Windows lives.

What controls the sequencing of font search paths, also the sequence of search within a font folder, and the match of fonts to requested styles? I'm not clear on the whole font handling scheme, also on which tools can be used to preview TrueType fonts (the FULL char set, no "quick brown fox" etc.).

Another thing, while I'm on the subject: Is there an "honest" font previewer that will show the actual defined glyphs for weird fonts like Marlett, instead of substituting a default set of alphanumeric glyphs? Other than this I'm happy with KCharSelect.
