Installing KDE help files et al

When I bring up Help, I only see Unix manual pages in the search pane. I tried to use Build Search Index to build an index for the KDE utilities, but apparently the database for searching application manuals is missing, and I don't know what it's called.

How can I get a complete repertoire of search indices for Help?

Indeed, kdehelpcenter is not installed. But how can I locate it in the repos? I tried
      Code:
      sudo apt-get install kdehelpcenter
      and it couldn't find anything.

khelpcenter - help center for KDE

        help center for KDE
The KDE Help Center provides documentation on how to use the KDE desktop.

This package is part of KDE, and a component of the KDE base module.
See the 'kde' and 'kdebase' packages for more information.
        I don't know why it isn't kdehelpcenter

Installing KDE and info help files

khelpcenter is indeed installed. But a search for kde apps, e.g., digicam, comes up with just this:

          Search Results for 'digicam':
          Top-Level Documentation
          UNIX manual pages
Also, I'd like to be able to include info-based documentation for apps such as grub and emacs in the help system and I don't know how to do that either. Also, if I enter the help system and go to "build search index", all I see is "Application Manuals", and clicking on "build Index" doesn't change that.

If you mean digikam then maybe:
            Dapper (2 packages):
            Package digikam
            Package digikamimageplugins

            But in Feisty (4 packages):
            Package digikam
            Package digikamimageplugins
            Package digikam-doc
Handbook for digikam and showfoto in several languages
            Package digikamimageplugins-doc
Handbook for digikam image editor plugins in several languages

            They have man pages.
            In the konsole:
            Code:
            man <name>
            Example:
            Code:
            :~$ man man

            MAN(1) Manual pager utils MAN(1)

            NAME
man - an interface to the on-line reference manuals

            SYNOPSIS
                man [-c|-w|-tZ] [-H[browser]] [-T[device]] [-adhu7V] [-i|-I] [-m sys‐
                tem[,...]] [-L locale] [-p string]....
You also can use konqueror: enter man:<name> in the URL line.

Digikam was just an example -- I know how to get its docs independent of the help system. What I'm looking for is a way to include all KDE apps in the search system of kdehelp so that I can search for them just as I would search for a Unix app.

I am also not able to use my KDE help files. I was using the application documentation off the CDROM, but once I installed Kubuntu they were no longer indexed. I found htdig.desktop using Konqueror, but the file has not been given a type. What do I need to do to link everything together?

In Adept Manager, install the htdig package. You will then be able to build indexes of the Application Manuals and UNIX Manuals in KDE. Just installed it and tried it out. It works.

I am able to find the htdig file with Konqueror and with
"Find Files/Folders", where it is called "Desktop Config File".
I have not been able, however, to find it with the Adept
Manager Search. What do I need to do to find it and
                    install it with Adept Manager?

htdig and Build Index are not enough

I've installed htdig and danced the "Build Index" quadrille. Now when I do a help search for k3b I get the following cryptic runes:

                      Search Results for 'k3b':
                      Top-Level Documentation

                      Application Manuals
                      khc_htsearch.pl --docbook --indexdir=/home/pwa/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index/ --config=kde_application_manuals --words=k3b --method=and --maxnum=5 --lang=en

                      UNIX manual pages
k3b - KDE CD burning program
So where do I go from here?

                        &quot;Build Index&quot; errors

It's probably relevant that I get these errors when I do the build-index operation:
/home/pwa/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index//kde_application_manuals.tmp/docbookparser: 9: Syntax error: Bad substitution

/home/pwa/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index//kde_application_manuals.tmp/docbookparser: 9: Syntax error: Bad substitution
                        3:59:1:help://kcontrol/index.docbook: size = 17019
/home/pwa/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index//kde_application_manuals.tmp/docbookparser: 9: Syntax error: Bad substitution
                        4:58:1:help://kcontrol/windowmanagement/index.docbook: size = 2104

                        (and more of the same)
