    Why is firefox so crash-prone

Just recently I upgraded from firefox 1.5 to 2 in the hope it would reduce the frequent hangs and crashes I seem to suffer. I also uninstalled all extensions. However, it still seems to crash a lot. Many hangs can be traced to the flash plugin, but not all.

Is there anything likely to be wrong with my setup that's causing this? Is it simply a matter of too little RAM? (Specs are in signature)

Also, can people recommend a browser that is more stable. Last I tried Konqueror was even worse than firefox, but that might have changed.

PS: Before anyone suggest it, I can't cut memory usage by switching to xfce because I like Amarok too much.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

provided you set enough swap space, ram size should not be an issue.
your box will be slow, but stuff should still run all right.
you could use the following to let us know how much swap you have enabled:
    Code:
    swapon -s
you can also try reducing your mem footprint.
here's some good reading on the subject:
    http://www-128.ibm.com/developerwork...ux-memory.html

btw, ibm developerworks has a lot of good stuff on linux.

    as for firefox...
i've used it for several years and it's always been stable.
i now use konqueror most of the time and only start ff ocasionally.
there might be a swiftfox around for your arch.
you might check that out as well.

    btw:
amarok runs on xubuntu as well, just like it runs on gnome or anything else.
though, my experience with xubuntu is not...well...encoraging
    gnu/linux is not windoze
