    A Couple Of Issues

    Hey guys,
I'm a Linux virgin who just installed Dapper on my Thinkpad X31 today. I seem to have managed the install and partitioning etc. and most things seem to be working.

I do however have a couple of issues. After a bit of a search, I have found I am too ignorant to understand the solutions given elsewhere.

First of all, I would quite like to install a trackpoint specific driver (perhaps). The PS/2 one is working, but it seems very jerky, and after playing around with the settings, I can't seem to get a comfortable result.

Second of all, The wireless card has been detected, but I am unable to connect to any networks. When I open up Wifimanager, it mentions me not having the correct privileges and 'sudo'. I can see available wireless networks, and enter settings, but it just doesn't want to connect to any of them.

I'm willing to bet that these are both simple things to solve, and hopefully learning the solutions to these problems will help me solve others I may encounter later.

    Your help is much appreciated!

    Mike

    Hi,

Can you give more info about this wireless card, can you tell us what it is ?
    Maybe by
    Code:
    sudo lspci
    Cheers

Just ran that command. The Konsole scares me at the moment. I guess that'll change pretty quickly.

Ok, sorry to have to scare you
I hope you will not be to scared also by what I will ask now... as I'm command line addict
So first open a konsole and type this :
        sudo iwconfig
        sudo ifconfig
        sudo iwlist <name_of_your_interface_answering_for_iwconfig> scanning

Can you post all this please ?

            Re: A Couple Of Issues

            Hi,

You really have a lot of wifi in your neighbourhood
So, you're wifi interface is eth1

To configure your wifi, you need the name of your network (essid). If it's encrypted network, please tell us what encryption it uses (WEP, WPA), if it's not so open the file /etc/network/interfaces to add these lines :
            kdesu kate /etc/network/interfaces

            auto eth1
            iface eth1 inet dhcp
            wireless-essid <name_of_your_network>

If there's other lines about eth1, so remove these previous lines.
            Then to restart network, type
            Code:
            sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
            Or restart the computer.

            Hope it helps

              Re: A Couple Of Issues

Yeah, sadly all of them are encrypted to some degree or another :P

The network is WEP encrypted, but even so I thought I'd fill out the file with what was given, as I'd previously tried to edit /etc/fstab to add in a partition for my documents without success.

I'm getting the same issue here with the wireless file. When I try to save I get an error.

This document could not be saved, as it was not possible to write to file:///etc/fstab

Check that you have write access to this file or that enough disc space is available.
I know there's enough disc space free, so it must be an access issue. Fair play for them trying to stop me messing up my system really.

I've loaded up the Wireless Assistant, and it asks me to log in, then tells me

You might have insufficient permissions for Wireless Assistant to function properly.

Did you run it using 'sudo'?
I'd really like to this application working, so that there's a GUI tool for wireless networks, and there must be a way to get it to work, it finds the networks, and displays them, just won't connect.

I think that's what was stopping me connecting. I'm off to have an explore to see if I can change anything using System Settings.

                Re: A Couple Of Issues

Did you try to launch it by sudo or kdesu ?
Anyway, if the network is only wep protected add one more line to the file I told you :
                wireless-key <key>

To edit the file you need to enter "sudo" mode by typing "kdesu" in front of the gui you want to enter.

Not directly related, but with all that other activity going on, I would suggest you use channel 1 for least interference.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

Essid and the little configuration bubble will pop up and stall at 28%.
and I have compaq laptop. I had installed kubuntu 7.04 on it.

Your question is not likely to get answered where it is. You might try the stuff mentioned in the earlier replies, but if that is not helping you, you should open a new topic.
