I am very green at this linux world, loving it for what it is, the whole freedom revolution thing and all, but fundamentally I am just not getting the system. I am looking for, perhaps, someone to take me under their wing and learn me a few things about some of the basics of linux. Honestly, i'm not where I should be in the computing world at all.. I'm sure I have some serious deficiencies in my understanding of network principals as well.. A long series of disappointments from the world of windows has caused me to want to shun that way of life. The apex of my dissapointment came when I was forced to change out my motherboard and reactivate my windows, which I couldn't do because of the number of times i've had to reactivate my copy of windows due to viral infections, hardware failures, etc. was exceeded. So naturally windows decided to hijack my harddrive, in essence, making it impossible for someone of my technical skill able to access my data. My being financially unable to buy another copy resigned myself to my fate of plunging head first into the scary world of linux. A world which I know nothing about, but am really enjoying the spirit of it. I applaude you if you have read through all this babble.. I'll try to get the point soon if I can remember it.
As of right now, I have played around with a few distro's, namely SuSe, Ubuntu and now Kubuntu. I've come to realize that I like the K desktop over the Gnome one.. Perhaps because of my limited understanding of the shell terminal bash whatever.. And i've decided I want to go with Kubuntu, mainly because its more fun to say than SuSe.. So I've installed kubuntu onto my laptop.. Here is some system specs..
I'm running a Toshibe Satellite A15 S129 with 2.4 G celeron, 256k RAM, 40 GB hard drive.
The installation went smoolhly and the system seems pretty stable except i'm having trouble getting the pcmcia wifi card to work. Well, I think the card is working because when i run the wireless assistant, my wireless network shows up in the list. I just dont know how to connect to it.. I try to let it automatically configure but that doesnt work... I'm thinking it may be something to do with the settings under the security tab.. I'm not sure what the differences are under WEP mode between Open System and Shared Key.. It seems like that should be common sence but mine has failed me.. And under WEP Key, I am assuming that this is the password I used when I set up the wireless network in the first place.. As for manually configuring the interface, Im not sure where to get the numbers i need to use for this. I believe the gateway I use is the number on my wireless router.. Other than that, im not sure what other numbers i need..
Thanks for any help with this..
