if you can access the internet from the win98 machine, and have internet sharing setup on the winxp box, then just set the gateway up in the kubuntu box (system settings > network) to 192.168.0.1 and add your dns servers as well.

i am getting internet connection shared between windows xp and windows 98 through a proxy software called analog x and want to know whether dns server and ip address server are the same and how to find dns it in windows xp

the gateway should be specified in the route tab or in advanced settings of the configure interface window for the network device

A good IP tool to use in windows is ipconfig. A DOS window need to be opened from the start>run menu. Put CMD in that box and press enter. When you have a C:\ enter ipconfig /all, I think. Haven't done this in a long time so I am not completely sure if it it /all or - all but try /all first. You will see all the IP settings associated with the NIC's in that PC.

that is kind of a rotten way to share a connection. if you are near any large outlet like staples/bestbuy/costco, it would be easier to buy a router to share the connection. it will give you a nice firewall and then you can share as many computers at once on that connection. most routers have at least 4 ports. my old wifi router has 4 ports and also wifi wan. it retails for less than us$40 dollars. or you can order them online at places like http://www.newegg.com/

my experience with ms is that too many issues can crop up and always at the worst of times. hardware router is simply the way to go . . .

            good luck to you!

            wishing you well.

Re: internet connection sharing help needed

i am living in India and a basic router costs here about 80$,
thats too much money to spend on routers ,and my adsl modem has built in router in it ,

my isp assigns dynamic ip address for my broadband connection

this question may be silly to you,

i have two nic's in my amd computer and ,one nic is used for modem to Ethernet connection and another nic is used for the lan connection between two computers

my doubt is ,that i should assign the dns server address of my second nic or first nic,

how to test my internet connection through shell or konsole ,

when i ping my amd pc from my Intel celeron kubuntu box,
it works and goes on displaying packets and ip address
without stopping and i have to stop it manually only,
but samba works great for me in kubuntu

Re: internet connection sharing help needed

When you ping you have to give it a count:

                ping -c 3 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

                This will send three packets
                ~$sudo make me a sandwich

Re: internet connection sharing help needed

Connect the switch to the ADSL modem's LAN port and then connect the two machines to the switch. The switch should split the connection transparently. All you need to do is configure the card on your Kubuntu box.

                    K>>Systems Settings>>Network Settings>>Administrator Mode>>Password
                    ~$sudo make me a sandwich

                        open a konsole and write
                        sudo kate

                        browse to the /etc/apt/sources list

remove the # from the repository entries
                        then try the update ...

Re: internet connection sharing help needed

i have already solved the problem ,
i reinstalled the distro and then it picked up everything automatically after the installation and everything worked fine

                          thanks for the reply

when i searched the net for installing flash, java, and other multimedia codecs,

i came across three projects that are doing more or less the same job of installing restricted software in kubuntu ,

i don't think other distributions like suse, fedora, mandriva ,and vectorlinux have only one package for one solution

when i found this i was taken a back with the question why there are one or more packages for doing the same job of installing restricted software ,

but Linux means choices and the developers can create one solid application rather creating group of packages for doing same job

but finally settled with easyubuntu and usually i like to install packages separately

this fragmentation of Linux apps and Linux distribution may result as a roadblock in spreading its wings in various sectors in the coming years
