Wireless network only connects vis Networking tool

I reinstalled Dapper on my laptop, and now the only way to get my wireless to connect is to use the Networking program included in Ubuntu. Before the reinstall, I could use programs like Wifi-Radar (which I prefer). Now, when I fire up another program, it (very quickly) says 'connecting- got IP address', but the only IP I have is 127.0.0.1. Why might this be happening?

    Intel Centrino chipset
    Intel ipw3945 wireless card

Post the contents of /etc/network/interfaces. It maybe that your wifi is not set-up properly there ...
