    Running postfix and mutt

I've installed postfix and mutt on my PC. I've tried the
mutt interface and I like what I see, but I can't send or
receive e-mail yet. I've looked over the documentation
from both, but I don't really see any specific
instructions for the initial set up between postfix on
my PC and the outside world.

    Currently, I'm receiving mail,
    using netscape 7.2, from Verizon
    through incoming.yahoo.verizon.net and
    outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net. The incoming
mail is from a POP server. Can postfix
be set up to communicate with these
    two verizon servers?

If not, how to I set up postfix to commicate
with other mail transfer agents? I assume
that it should communicate with a mail
transfer agent at Verizon since Verizon
is my ISP. Do I call up Verizon and get
    the connection information from them?
And once I get that information, what
    parameters in the postfix configuration
    file need to be set?

Thank you in advance for any advise someone
    can provide.

    Re: Running postfix and mutt

To get mail form your (verizon) pop3 server use fetchmail, it acts as a conduit between a remote pop/imap server and you own local mail delivery system.

As for sending, ideally you want to send directly to the host, so you send a mail to jon@foo.com and postfix goes and talks to the mailserver at foo.com and delivers the message for jon, alternately you can set it up to forward smtp requests to your verizon smtp server.
This is a pretty comprehensive guide

Thank you for the information! I've looked over the
guide and it looks like I will have a lot of work ahead
of me. I'd like to first get fetchmail, postfix and mutt
running, but that quide has a lot of additions which
can be useful for blocking spam, etc.

When I looked at Adept, fetchmail is not included
as a package. I suspect I need to add more
repositories in my /etc/apt/sources.list file. Is this
correct? [NOTE: I've tried adding the repositories
suggested in the guide, but I've had problems
so far and I'm working on that as a separte issue.

        Re: Running postfix and mutt

I'm part way there. I have installed fetchmail and
postfix and I'm now able to receive my mail from
        Verizon.

My outgoing mail is getting rejected. I'm reading
and experimenting at this point. I have attached
the returned email. On inspection, it looks like
the mail was sent to 'jja@ieee.org'. Which should
have been 'ezjab@ieee.org'. I'll be looking at how
        to control the 'to' ID.
