I need help with my Wireless conection

I have a new laptop Compaq Presario v2617la (la means Latin American, the keyboard is in spanish, nothing more) with AMD Semprom 3000, 512 ram with wireless card Broadcom (4318) 802.11b/g. And Kubuntu Dapper drake -with updates-

I solved the first problem, activte the wirelss card, because Kubutu detected and configure it, but not activate. Now, always at turn on the computer, the light of wireless is on, with the program Wireless Assistant is possible see the networks from hotspots or university, but when i try to conect it, take some seconds and i get "Conecction Failed" and never connect it. I don't know what to do, but I think is a very small step that I need to have my wireless concetion. I have configure it as "DHCP", and my wirelees conecction is eth1

Try knetworkmanager as I have the same problem but its sorted when I use knetworkmanager.

You can get it using Adept.
    Noooooooooobie learning.

Are you using a firewall, in particular guarddog for example?

IIRC, the wireless assistant needs to use "ping". In a terminal type sudo wlassistant and after typing in your password look for errors. Unless you configure the firewall to permit the protocal the wireless assistant will always produce that error.

If you receive some other message, please advise.

i have been trying for months to get mine working.

        http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=5821.0

not getting much help either, but I may look into some pay support because i really like the distro.

I hate to say it but SLED 10 works on mine out of the box.

Re: I need help with my Wireless conection

Prior to Dapper it was murder which is why I never switched earlier.

          Tips:

Restrict the action you do within system settings to enabling the card.

Launch Kwifmanager which will tell you whether your network is detected. Set that to run on startup for visible evidence in the taskbar of a connection

Use the wireless assistant for a pain-free entry of the connection data. This little applet was what finally convinced me to move from Mandriva. It should then run and kwifmanager should turn green in the taskbar - if it does not, type sudo wlassistant in a terminal and look for error messages. Every reboot you will need to run this to connect - it's not automatic on startup.

mine is in the startup and it does not recognize the network at startup.

            run ifconfig ath0 down
            run ifconfig ath0 up

Then go to System Settings, Network Settings, Admin Mode, right click the card, disable, and then enable and it works.

No, I don't have fiewall; I tried knetworkmanager, but don't connect, like Wireless Asistant. I must say that Kubuntu detect my wireless card, and configure it, every time at start up the light of wireless is on, and in Network Devices is activate. But not connect with hotspots,

                Hi,
I finally have my wireless working without. I know this sounds too simple, but do you have a keystroke combination that you must execute to turn your wireless on? For me it is Function & F2. I know you said that Ubuntu finds the card, but that is on a hardware level.

Re: I need help with my Wireless conection

If you try to use knetworkmanager, you must not use you interfaces file. Knetworkmanager configures the wireless in a different way and that file causes it not to work. Comment out all lines in the /etc/network/interfaces file except for the loopback configuration. Mine looks like this:
                  Code:
                  # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
                  # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

                  # The loopback network interface
                  auto lo
                  iface lo inet loopback
                  address 127.0.0.1
                  netmask 255.0.0.0

                  # This is a list of hotpluggable network interfaces.
                  # They will be activated automatically by the hotplug subsystem.

                  #	map eth1
                  #	map eth0

                  # The primary network interface
                  #iface eth1 inet dhcp

                  #iface eth0 inet dhcp

                  #iface wlan0 inet dhcp
After you make the change to the interfaces file, try rebooting and see if knetworkmanager works.

your solution did not work for me. in fact using your solution made it worse as the interface was disabled and could not be started, or configured.

but thanks... at least from me, and if you have anymore suggestions please post.

Re: I need help with my Wireless conection

It doesn't disable the interface and it doesn't make things worse. Everything I told you is easily reversed. Simply remove the comment marks (#) from in front of each line that you placed it and you can go back to trying your other solutions.

I've been working with Kubuntu for a while now and I have four other users whose computers I manage running it as well. Wireless is always a difficult process. With some cards, it just works. With others, ifconfig, iwconfig, ifup, ifdown and changing the configuration files (interfaces) works quite well. With some computers, wlassistant seems the best approach. Others find kwifimanager best.

But some people have success using knetworkmanager. I'm using it now on my Thinkpad t43.

But knetworkmanager cannot work if you leave the interfaces file intact. Someone earlier had suggested using knetworkmanager. You said you'd tried it. I only wanted you to understand that the program cannot work if you don't make the alterations to the interfaces file. It doesn't mean the program will work when used correctly. Only that it can't possibly work if you don't.

If you return the file to its earlier condition, you'll be in exactly the same place as you were before. No worse and no better off. Simply with a non-functioning wireless connection.

Re: I need help with my Wireless conection

Thanks, but still my wireless don't work. I'm not sure if some key code must activate mu wireless, as I understandm ny wireless is activate, because with Wireless Assitant and Knetworkmanager, is possible see networks from hotspots and university; the problem is when I try to conect them. Like hotspots don't need password, I have a DHCP configuration, but not connect. I chek /etc/network/interfaces but I did'nt see something wrong.

                            not yet.

I tried the knetworkmanager program, but not work. I'm sure that is a very small step, because the most dificult step is fixed (the detection of network card by the system and configuration).
