    Wireless Networking

    Hi
How do I subscribe to a wireless network using kubuntu? I have a netgear router (WPN824) connected to a cable modem. I am using the usb dongle that came with the router to try and connect, but I don't know where to get the drivers from or how to install the drivers in kubuntu. Does anyone know what I need to do please?

    Regards,

    rensbuja,
Can you hardwire the computer to the router via an ethernet cable and one of the ports on the back of the linksys?

So, let me see if understand. You have a cable modem and connect to it is a netgear wireless router? And you can't connect your laptop/pc to the router via wireless?
If this is the case, what wireless card is in your laptop/computer?

            rensbuja,
            1) I would recommend starting from the wireless modem/router and working my way back. Recheck your setup and see if security is keeping you out. My recommendation is to have no security set until you can work out all the kinks. Is the router set for dhcp or is your cable modem.

If your satisfied with the router setup, then check to see if your wireless card is being recognized by kubuntu. There are a couple of things you can do.
In konsole as root lshw (this lists all your hardware) look for your card. Here's how my card displays.

            *-network:1
            description: Wireless interface
            product: PRO/Wireless 2200BG
            vendor: Intel Corporation
            physical id: 3
            bus info: pci@03:03.0
            logical name: eth1
            version: 05
            serial: 00:12:f0:98:4b:62
            width: 32 bits
            clock: 33MHz
capabilities: bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless
            configuration: broadcast=yes driver=ipw2200 driverversion=1.1.1 firmware=ABG:9.0.2.6 (Mar 22 2005) ip=192.168.254.3 link=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11g
            resources: iomemory:dfcfd000-dfcfdfff irq:201

            In konsole type lspci -v
Here's what my wireless device shows up as

            0000:03:03.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG (rev 05)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation: Unknown device 2721
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 201
            Memory at dfcfd000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
            Capabilities: <available only to root>

Depending on if kubuntu is finding your device and loading the module for it isn't, determines our next steps.

              Re: Wireless Networking

Thanks for that advice Jim, I did as you said, found that the problem was driver related and followed the instructions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...081cae&t=31926 to fix it.
Thanks very much for you help.
