    Kubuntu shows fake IP address

Can someone point me in the right direction

My Kubuntu machine is connected to my Dlink router and accessing network. Dlink is issuing private IP address correctly, but when I check IP on Kubuntu machine it shows bogus IP starting with 169..... How is this possible?

If I do ifconfig I still see 169.....address, is there something else to be configured?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The 169.254.xxx.yyy address that you're seeing is not bogus. 169.254. is the prefix for a "private network" i.e. it is probably the address that you have been given by either your internet service provider, or your home router. I believe, (but, I could be wrong) that the convention is that home routers use 192.168.xxx.yyy and ISPs use 169.254.xxx.yyy. In any event, you don't have to worry about it. Just use the address.

does this equally apply if you use 10.0.0.xx series of local addresses.

I believe so based on the same reasoning, i.e. a private network is a private network, no matter how large, (or small) it is.
