ASUS Wireless LAN Adapter

    ASUS Wireless LAN Adapter

    Hi,

    A few days ago, I installed Kubuntu on my old Pentium III. At first sight, I really liked the interface and the simplicity to use it (especially for a n00b like me ).

    But there is one problem: KNetwork Manager (or whatever this tool is called, in fact I'm typing this on my AMD Athlon 2400+, where good ol' Windows XP has been installed ) doesnt recognize my network adapter. It's an ASUS USB Pen Type WLAN Adapter for the 802.11b protocol.

    It could be that you guys aren't familiar with this adapter, because I bought it at my provider (Belgacom) in Belgium. But I think all these adapters are the same, so I would have the same problem with another adapter, I guess.

    Also, I thought the tool didn't recognize the adapter because I had to install drivers. Well, that's the problem: the CD only contains drivers for Windows XP and Windows 2000. So I looked up drivers at www.asus.com. I found Linux drivers there, for Kernel 2.4.5. I have no idea which version of the Linux kernel is used by Kubuntu. The next problem was discovered when reading the readme. It contained only information for Fedora and Redhat. Not even Debian, which I could possibly use, cause I know Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu are based on Debian.

    So, I guess you'll already know what I'm going to ask. If not: Can you guys please help me?

    Kubuntu version 6 uses 2.6.15 kernel.
    You can get your kernel version in a console kmenu/system/konsole by typing
    uname -r

    I can't help you with your overall problem. There seem to have been a number of threads recently with people having problems getting USB wireless adapters working.

      Well, there was this guy who told me to use ndiswrapper to convert the Windows driver into a Linux driver. I installed it using apt-get, user-friendly as Kubuntu is . But now, when I look at apt-get, it says ndiswrapper is installed, so that's not the problem.

      The problem is: I copied the .inf and the .sys file to my desktop, because I didn't really know what to do with it. I know those are the files ndiswrapper uses.

      Only, I still don't know how to use these two files with ndiswrapper. Is there a special command for that? Please let me know, so I can move on with Kubuntu...

        I'm not an expert, but this I know...

        Kmenu/System/Console

        Typ:

        sudo ndiswrapper -i the_name_of_the_.inf

        I did this too,

        sudo ndiswrapper -i the_name_of_the_.sys

        If there are still problems, then sorry.
        Then I can't help you further. Like I said, I'm not an expert in this. I too have here a thread asking for help.

            Ok, I did this in Konsole:

            nico@kubuntu ~$ sudo ndiswrapper -i Desktop/sis162u.inf, which worked properly
            nico@kubuntu ~$ sudo ndiswrapper -i Desktop/sis162u.sys, which doesn't seem to react.

            Both files are copied to my desktop, so that's why I typed Desktop/...
            When I type sudo ndiswrapper -l, it gives me a list of installed drivers (which you guys will probably know, you know more about Kubuntu than me). The list says the following:

            sis162u hardware present, driver present
            sis162u.sys Installation invalid

            And I do need the .sys file, or Network Manager won't recognize my Adapter...

            I tried surfing the Internet using Konqueror without installing the .sys file, but it won't work...

              Goed gedaan. Je moest trouwens niet "desktop/..." opgeven, hij zoekt er automatisch naar (vandaar dat het afgeraden is 2 keer .inf - bestanden te hebben mét exact dezelfde naam)

              Maar het is je gelukt, de driver is toegevoegd. Wat .sys betreft, ja, ik had wat beter moeten nadenken.

              Ga naar een console venster en typ "sudo konqueror"
              Mogelijk geeft hij een hele lijst vol fouten, maar dat moet je volledig negeren en gewoon afwachten, want na een tijd zal er een nieuw venster opspringen met daarin Konqueror. Konqueror is namelijk niet enkel een internet-browser.

              Van zodra Konqueror is opgestart, ga je naar de adressenbalk (waardat je normaal gezien een adres intypt, voorbeeld: www.skynet.be) , alleen typ je er deze keer géén internetadres in, maar slechts:

              "/" (zonder de " meegerekend)

              Je ziet een hoop mapjes nu, klik op degene die "etc" heet. Vervolgens zoek je naar een map genaamd "ndiswrapper"
              Daar aangekomen zie ofwel ineens je .inf - file staan, ofwel nog maar eens een map. Indien je nog een map vindt, klik deze dan ook open. Hier moet je dan normaal gezien wel je .inf - file zien staan.

              Map of geen map, zodra je je .inf - file hebt teruggevonden, minimaliseer je Konqueror en kopiër je de .sys - file die op je desktop staat. Open terug Konqueror en plak de .sys naast de .inf - file.

              Log eventjes uit (sessie beëndigen) en log terug in.

              Verwacht niet dat je nu al internet hebt, want dat is niet zo... Nu moet je nog het volgende doen...

              Console-venster, typ er dit in:

              sudo depmod -a
              Normaal gezien zegt hij iets, doet hij het niet, negeer het dan. Als hij fouten zegt, blijf je dit commanda (sudo depmod -a) typen totdat hij geen fouten meer weergeeft.

              sudo ndiswrapper -m
              Misschien zegt hij wel "alias ndiswrapper" ofzo, in elk geval hierna typ je:

              sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
              Hierna kan je gerust "exit" typen, wat wilt zeggen dat je de console afsluit.

              Alles staat klaar voor je stick, maar je wilt waarschijnlijk wel bij het opstarten van de computer dit geheel 'spelletje' niet opnieuw doen, ofwel?

              Console:
              Code:
              sudo kate
              Misschien weer een hoop erros, negeer deze maar. Na een tijdje springt er terug een nieuw venster open, deze keer geen Konqueror maar een tekstediter.
              Menu Bestand (in Kate, niet het consolevenster!) "openen".
              Ga naar /etc/ en open het bestand Modules. Let op: dit is geen map.

              Helemaal onderaan het document typ je "ndiswrapper" , nadat je dit hebt getypt druk je op enter, zodat er een witte regel komt. Hierna druk je op "bestand" "opslaan".

              Bij de console mag je nu op "exit" drukken.

              Herstart de computer.

              Normaal gezien zou je nu internet moeten hebben, indien niet wilt dat zeggen dat je nog niet ingelogd bent op je wireless router...
              Eerst en vooral moet ik weten: welke sleutel gebruik je voor je router? Nee, niet het wachtwoord zeggen, maar wel zeggen welke beveiliging. Heb je WPA , WPA-PSK , WEP of geen sleutel?
              Namelijk, als je WPA hebt, dan weet ik niet hoe je dit precies moet doen in Linux, zo ver ben ikzelf nog niet gekomen. Als je WEP of géén sleutel hebt, dan open je het K-menu --> Internet --> wireless assistant (hetgeen helemaal onderaan het lijstje staat)
              Zoek naar je wireless modem en maak er verbinding mee. Als je dan toch nog steeds geen internet hebt of Wireless Assistint geeft errors en je kan het niet gebruiken, dan geen paniek : dan moet je alsnog de laatste fase doen. Maar deze is zeer simpel.

              Je kan zeggen: je hebt mooi praat, je hebt zelf geen internet.
              Maar mijn stickje is een speciaal gevalletje hoor.

              Ik raad je misschien aan om mijn uitleg eventjes af te drukken, gezien ik niet denk dat je dit allemaal kan onthouden en overschrijven wordt een helse klus.

                En wie weet wordt ik straks nog geband omdat ik hier Nederlands zit te praten. Ze kunnen enkel de commando's lezen.

                  Ik zal het tweetalig doen/ I'll do it in two languages:

                  Het is me ondertussen gelukt. Ik moest het .sys file niet installeren. Het .inf file heeft .sys ineens meegenomen naar de map ndiswrapper. Ik dacht dat het daarmee opgelost was, maar ik had niet ver genoeg gekeken. Ik moest dus nog een stap doen. Wat jij zei over die errors dus.

                  I did it. I didn't had to copy the .sys file, since the .inf file already took it with him. I thought I solved the problem doing that, but I had to think twice. I still had to take another step, what you said about that error check.

                    I'm happy that it works now, for you. ... Next time I will buy an Assus-stick and not a USR-stick.

                      You know, ASUS sticks aren't as good as you think... I mean, in my case. I have a relatively old pc, 4 years old. So my network card only support sticks for the 802.11b protocol, while the 802.11g protocol is much faster. So I went to Belgacom, my Internet provider to buy a 802.11b stick. They only work with ASUS. Why? I don't know. But there are lot's of problems with it.
                      To start with: sometimes my adapter loses connection for an unknown reason. Normally, it finds its network soon, but when it has a bad day, it can take up to 10 minutes before it finds connection. There is a solution: plug out my adapter, switch off therouter, plug in the adapter again and switch on the router. And then it still takes a minute to connect to our network.

                      But it could also be a little bit of my fault. When the adapter has one of his black-outs again, I plug it out and throw it aigainst the wall. That's a bit unhealthy, I guess
