Wireless USB Stick, it isn't found...

Pfff, look: I like Kubuntu. I like Linux. It isn't the fault of Linux that it doesn't support wireless like it should, that's the fault of the hardware-"people" that creates those hardware and didn't create a driver for Linux.

(By the way, forgive me for my English, I know it isn't very good.)

A good friend of mine helped me with the wireless-ussue. But we didn't found the solution. Unfortunalty.

I installed ndiswrapper. But my stick (U.S.Robotics 5421)

It didn't had an ".inf" file on it... Big problems... But in the list from ndiswrapper my USR-stick was on it... And they said that I most "opened" some "Setups"... I did this using Winzip Pro... Wow, Suddently I had maps... And not those setups anymore, but in those maps there weren't .inf files in it...

Pfff, it was useless. But the stick is brandnew. And it was not very cheep.

But okay, as a temporary solution I used my old wireless stick.
    This is a Topcom Skyr@cer V2

But even this wasn't so good... On the cd I found the ".inf" file... I copy it to my desktop and I gaved some commands in the Console:

    Code:
    jenthe@jenthe-pc:~$ sudo ndiswrapper -i sis163u.inf
    Password:

You need two files in order to use ndiswrapper: the .inf file and the .sys file. Copy both of those to the same directory and then run your ndiswrapper -i filename.inf from that directory.

If it was that simple, I probably didn't need any help.

My USR-stick doesn't have any .inf or .sys -files on it... Including the cd-rom and the setup that I downloaded from the internet.

My Topcom-stick has .inf and .sys files on it. But they aren't the write drivers I guess, because I get this:

      Code:
      jenthe@jenthe-pc:~$ ndiswrapper -l
      Installed ndis drivers:
      autorun invalid driver!
      sis163u invalid driver!

In general, you might want to consider avoiding such comments. When you ask for help on a forum, the people who respond to your requests are doing just that: trying to help. While that effort may not always be successful, or what they say may not prove useful, it is almost always a sincere effort.

If you go to this site:

        http://www.usr.com/support/product-t....asp?prod=5421

I think you can download the .exe file, run it in Windows, and get the sys and inf files from the resulting installation. You might want to try that and then install them with ndiswrapper for your USR device.

Re: Wireless USB Stick, it isn't found...

I'm sorry. Like I said: English isn't my best language... Sometimes I don't even know what I'm saying.
It was not my intention to offend someone. Sorry.
I ask someone to translate my own writen sentence and indeed, it wasn't very "friendly".

That's the strange thing... In the ndiswrapper list I found my USR-stick and a download-link. The guide (the ndiswrapper list) told me to unpack it then and look for the .inf and .sys - files on it... Strange enough, I didn't found them. I unpacked as most as possible, but I didn't found it.
          Code:
            7. USB: US ROBOTICS USR805421 802.11g Wireless USB Adapter
               * Chipset:Unknown
               * usbid: 0baf:011B
               * Driver: Official U.S. Robotics [59]. Unpack it and install driver with USR5421X.inf. This doesn't copy the .sys files (.sys files for RNDIS driver are part of Windows, so they are not needed in Windows; however, driver for USR5421 distributes .sys files but they are not installed by .inf file); so copy RNDISMPK.sys and usb8023k.sys files into /etc/ndiswrapper/usr5421x directory as rndismpk.sys and usb8023k.sys respectively).
               * Other: Works with snapshot of 2006-02-13.
               * Other: With 2.6.16 and later kernels, RNDIS devices are not initialized (when device is plugged in, nothing happens). To get it going, you need to set the variable bConfigurationValue in sysfs. An easy way to do this is to add

           BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="001b", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0baf", PROGRAM="/bin/sh -c 'echo 1 > /sys/%p/device/bConfigurationValue'"

to /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_local_rules file and restart udev. Replace idProduct and idVendor as appropriate; for USR5421, 'lsusb' shows 001b (idProduct) and 0baf (idVendor).
So indeed, I most search for the .inf and .sys files on it, but didn't found any:

Here I just downloaded the file to my desktop and unpacked it, a new map was on my desktop:
          http://www.sjzeno.net/W&W/amp.JPG

Inside the map, you see this:
          http://www.sjzeno.net/W&W/inhoud.JPG

I couldn't unpack "Setup" anymore, but I could do this with "Data". So I unpacked "Data" and again, a new map called "Data" was created. This is a look into the map "Data":
          http://www.sjzeno.net/W&W/Disk1.JPG

And that was it. I couldn't unpack anything anymore. Not those 2 Winzip-files, nothing. And you see: there aren't any .inf or .sys files on it.

I almost gaved up hope. My Windows XP is very slowly and needs to be reïnstalled... But then he will overwrite the MBR (Master Boot Record) and Kubuntu will disseapper... I hoped that I could switch from XP to Kubuntu by now, but the only thing that is stopping me is this big wireless-issue.
Your post gaved me a bit hope, so I shall wait with my reïnstall... If everything comes alright with Kubuntu, then I can ignore XP.

And again: sorry. It wasn't my intention to be cruel.

          Greetz,
          SJ

          EDIT:
I've been reading some topics here... Can it be possible that I have this issue because I use the Kubuntu 6.06 64-bit version?
Nah, I don't think so. Am I right? I don't think so because I've installed already ndiswrapper and I driver doens't look to your cpu-version. Right?

Re: Wireless USB Stick, it isn't found...

I don't know anything about the 64 bit version of Kubuntu, but I do know that it has given many people trouble. Recently, I read on one of these forums that someone had abandoned the 64 bit version and gone with the 32 bit version with much greater success.

The link I gave allows you to download an .exe file. That file will install the USR on a Windows system. You'll need to run the file under Windows. Then, in Windows, you'll need to search for the .inf and .sys files. Then you'll need to copy those files from Windows to Linux.

To copy the files, you can use a USB drive that is formatted as a fat32 and copy the files to the USB drive in Windows and then copy from the USB drive to Linux.

If you're using a dual boot machine, you can mount your Windows hard drive partition from within Linux and copy the files directly from Windows to Linux.

But you can't simply "unpack" the files.

Re: Wireless USB Stick, it isn't found...

I have saved the files you need on my public FTP site. Download the .inf and .sys files from here:

              ftp.sc2.biz/pub

Then, follow the instructions from the ndsiwrapper wiki:

copy RNDISMPK.sys and usb8023k.sys files into /etc/ndiswrapper/usr5421x directory as rndismpk.sys and usb8023k.sys respectively).
In other words, when you put the files into the usr5421 subdirectory of ndiswrapper, make sure you use all lower case letters for the name.

              Then retry ndiswrapper.

Re: Wireless USB Stick, it isn't found...

Thank you very very much that you did this for me. I really appreciate what you did for me.

I downloaded with succes the ".sys" file (again: thank you very very much), but the .inf file is another story. If I click on it, I get a text. But no option for downloaded it...
But if I select the text, copy it too Wordpad (or another text-editor) , and I save that document as "USR5421X.inf", will that help?

                EDIT:
Yes, it works. I copy the text to a text-editor and saved the document as "USR5421X.inf". When I look up the document, I get this:
"Setup-data" (sorry, I actually don't know the word "gegevens" is in English, but I guess it is "Data"... Could be wrong offcourse.)
                It's the last file:

Re: Wireless USB Stick, it isn't found...

It worked, but by now I have almost a little depression.

The security in Kubuntu is fantastic to secure your system. But it is really annoying if it stops you from doing things.

My first question is about the wiki. It saids there most be 2 files, 1 .inf and 1 .sys. They called: "RNDISMPK.sys". This one I have, because you gaved it to me (thanks for that by the way ;-) )
The second file called "usb8023.k.inf" This is a strange file. I found at your ftp-server only the file "USR5421X.inf"
                    Hmm, should I rename "USR5421X.inf" to "usb8023k.inf" ?

The last question is about the submap in ndiswrapper...

The wiki says that I most copy the .inf and the .sys to /etc/ndiswrapper/usr5421x
OK, So I guess that I most creat I submap in /etc/ndiswrapper called "usr5421x" ... Right? When I do this, I got a error saying "acces denied" (or something likes that)

Next time I'll be much carefuller when I buy a wireless-device.

Thanks for helping me this far. And I hope you still be able to help me trough this probleme.

                    Sincerly,
                    SJ

Off-topic: by the way, when I post something here, I use an translater... I hope you can understand me correctly.

Re: Wireless USB Stick, it isn't found...

First, the directory in ndiswrapper should be created if you run:

                      Code:
                      sudo ndiswrapper -i USR5421X.inf
Second, the reason you can't create the directory there is that you don't have permission as a user. If you want to create the directory, you would have to open konqueror with:

                      Code:
                      sudo konqueror
Or you could do it from the command line with:

                      Code:
                      sudo mkdir /etc/ndiwrapper/usr5421x
Third, I don't know about the wiki. The instructions I quoted to you in my earlier post use this file, which seems to match your device. So I'd use this file and not change any names (unless you change the upper case to lower case...remember that Linux is case sensitive).

I will try this as soon as possible. I hope it will work. I think I'll change the upper case to lower case, and see if this works. If it doesn't, I will rename it from lower to upper case and hope it will works then...

Thank you so much Randcoop! Without you, I still tried to connect to the internet.

                          Thanks!

                          It almost works:
                          Code:

The driver works! And thanks to you!
But the weird thing is: still no internet.

But I personaly think that we most look at the wiki...

                              It says this:
                              * Other: With 2.6.16 and later kernels, RNDIS devices are not initialized (when device is plugged in, nothing happens). To get it going, you need to set the variable bConfigurationValue in sysfs. An easy way to do this is to add

                              BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="001b", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0baf", PROGRAM="/bin/sh -c 'echo 1 > /sys/%p/device/bConfigurationValue'"

to /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_local_rules file and restart udev. Replace idProduct and idVendor as appropriate; for USR5421, 'lsusb' shows 001b (idProduct) and 0baf (idVendor).
We all know that Kubuntu Dapper Drake has kernel 2.6.17 ... So, if I understand the wiki correctly, my kernel has some issues with RNDIS. It's true that there isn't happening something with the stick when I plugged it in.
So the solution: use Kubuntu Breezy Badger instead of Dapper Drake, OR do the following thing, like the wiki says..

But, it isn't that simple unfortunaltly.
                              bConfigurationValue in sysfs
                              I can't find that. >

                              to /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_local_rules
etc exist ( ) , udev exist too, rules.d exist but z25_local_rules doesn't exist! I can't find that file with that name.

Then I searched in /etc/ too "modprobe". I find it, and opened it. This sentence I found:
"alias ndiswrapper wlan0" ... Not the exist sentence, but you know what I mean...

I use Firefox because it's better and safer, I use Linux because it's the best of the best. Together they are like magic. USE THE FORCE, CHOOSE FREE AS IN FREEDOM!
