Setting up LAN

I have two machines - a desktop dual-booting Windows XP and Kubuntu 6.06 and a laptop with Kubuntu only. The setting up of the LAN between the laptop and Windows XP was a complete doddle - I almost had nothing to do.

WHY OH WHY then, is it SO BL***Y difficult to set up the LAN between the laptop and the Kubuntu booted desktop? Apart from the fact that the help files seem to be almost non-existant (how do I fix THAT?), what exactly, do I have to do to set up file sharing between the two Kubuntu boxes?

You would have thought that sharing between Kubuntu boxes would be far easier than between Kubuntu and XP, wouldn't you?

Hi,

It's just because you're not using dhcp server so kubuntu boxes are not getting ips... So they can't speak together, windows is different, is getting a ip even without being connected (almost)
Can you give the output of ipconfig of your windows box and ifconfig of your kubuntu working one so we will find a config for last one

gendibal has a point. I am stuck at the same place, running three linux boxes, two running Kubuntu and one running Suse and the only way I can get them to talk is by hand editing the smb.conf files, which I really don't want to do because I'm always changing which directories can be shared/read/written and by whom. (Five users in this house).

To make matters worse, under Kubuntu the Sharing module is not even editable. In other words, when I've entered the root password it remains greyed out. If I sudo Kcontrol I get the same problem.

And finally, why is the Samba module not visible under System Settings > Internet & Network but is visible under kcontrol? In fact, what is the relationship between the two?

I would really like to sort this out as it remains the last real Kubuntu headache, (for me, anyway).

I sorted the greyed out sharing module, (uninstalled and reinstalled samba and samba-common), so now I have a gui. Right click over a directory > properties > share > add.

Share appears on my other smb client but I get the error message "The file or folder smb://[workgroup/share] does not exist"

Any clues?

Thanks for that bit of info. I can now set the directories I want to share to be shared. BUT BUT BUT - I STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SEE THESE DIRECTORIES FROM THE OTHER MACHINE!

This is driving me ABSOLUTELY demented. WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT?

Well I've now given each machine a static IP, installed ssh, but still, when I go to "Add Network Folder" all I get, whatEVER I put in any of the boxes, is "cannot connect to the server"!!!!!! The "Help(?)" button does NOTHING! There IS NO HELP!

HOORAY! HOORAY! I've sorted it. I After setting static IP addresses (I didn't do this before because the WAP wouldn't work with static IP - it now seems to do so!) I went back to "add network folder" and discovered that the Server box needs the IP address WITHOUT the "//" in front, again NO help on this whatsoever.

But at least I now have file and directory sharing between the two machines set up. But BOY! Kubuntu doesn't go out of it's way to make it simple, does it?

I am so not the expert here, but for what it's worth, I finally figured out the, "file or folder smb://[workgroup/share] does not exist", problem. It seems the stock Kubuntu installation is set up to allow sharing from the home directory and nowhere else. In other words, when I share a subdirectory such as /home/nick/[anyoldfolder], (where 'nick' is my home directory, then anyoldfolder and all it's contents can be seen on my other machines. Finally. However, if I try and share /home/nick/Desktop/[anyoldfolder], then I get the unhelpful existential message. Go figure. If you want to do it differently, i.e., share directories in different places with passwords etc., I reckon you're better off editing samba.conf directly.

Also, and I'm sure you know this, typing 'smb://' in konqueror will set it off to search for any workgroups on the network.

On the Samba vs Sharing modules, I still have no idea how/if they work together. Perhaps someone who knows about Kubuntu might like to tell me?

And congratulations on making it work.

I haven't tried the 'sharing' module, maybe it's time to take a look. Editing text files isn't so bad, once you know what you're doing it's often faster. But pointy-clicky is nice too!

Just open Konqueror, enter"fish://remote-ip-address" and hit the enter key

So how come that's not common knowledge anywhere? And does that depend on having ssh and/or nfs installed? (Which it is not, by default....)
