    Can't see Kubuntu

    Hello all.

I've just set up a wireless network with Kubuntu and three XP boxes. Now while in Kubuntu and goto network places>>samba>>workgroup I can see all of the XP boxes and their files but Kubuntu does not show up under workgroup of any other computor. This was not a problem when I had one of the XP boxes wired to Kubuntu.

Any suggestions are always welcome. I think I just need a new pespective to see it. I think the trees are blocking my view of the forest.

    Thanks, erie.

    Re: Can't see Kubuntu

Ok I think I found out why. I set the connection to dhcp it receives an address but it not in the range for the router. This is strange because I can access the internet, log into the router to make changes etc.

I have tried to set the ip address to static in the range of the network. While things were resetting, system settings crashed and could no longer access inet or network or change things in network settings. I tried to reboot hoping it would clear the problem but I receive this error:

X session: warning: unable to write to /tmp; x session may exit with an error

and it sends me back to login. I tried to login to failsafe mode to fix the problem and received this error:

There was an error setting up interprocess communications for kde. The message returned by the system was:

Could not read network connection list.
    /home/dan/.DCOPserver_kubuntu_0
Please check that the "dcopserver" program is runnung

I can't get any further than this. I get past the login screen to the errors.

I could use some help here.

    Thanks, erie

        Re: Can't see Kubuntu

I am having pretty much the same problem. 2 XP boxes and one kubuntu box.
I did find some setting up guide that recommended this:
I set my router to give static IP addresses and in the smb.conf file, set WINS = yes.
Check the ip addy of the feisty box with I think it is ifconfig
Then go to the XP box and control panel, network options, find the correct adapter and properties of TCP/IP.
Advanced button and third (WINS) tab.
Add the feisty IP addy to the WINS box, and select the enable radio button. I think it is the second option.

That seemed to work for me yesterday morning, but then again in the afternoon it dissappeared again, only to re appaer later last night.

I can ping all boxes from each other box by IP address, but not by computer name, so I believe that is indicating a problem with name resolution, but not sure where the problem is.

Sorry, I cant check any more or give you links to follow, as I am doing this from my phone while away from the machines.

This happens on two setups I have here when on Dapper, the other on Feisty

That sounds like great info. However, I can't get past login because of the DCOPserver error. I will keep that in mind though.

Any suggestions on the error?? Anyone??

            Re: Can't see Kubuntu

One thing that has helped me in many similar situations is the naming of the groups. By default kubuntu smb is set up for "workgroup" while xp is set up for "mshome". try changing the domain name in the system settings => network panel and manually enter mshome in the domain box. Sometimes it will be stubborn and keep the workgroup domain. If you need to share files you will need to manually enter the info rather than use the gui.
