kubuntu keeps wanting to "sleep"?

when i start up kubuntu, and it gets to the part that says: "hardware abstraction layer hald", the screen turns off and the hard drive shuts down. then, i press a key on the keyboard, the screen and hard drive turn back on, and the screen and hard drive continue to shut off every 5 - 10 seconds.

any suggestions?

I guess it's a trouble with acpi... Can you try to modify the line of grub you boot to add noacpi at the end please ?
If it doesn't work, you can try with noapic nolapic
